Conference at the Cultural Center of Puyo

Finally it was fulfilled our desire to perform an act for the inhabitants of the nearby town of Puyo, capital of the province of Pastaza.

The lecture was entitled: "Trafficking of Wild Animals in environmental issues: proceedings from Sacha Yacu Wild Animal Rescue Centre" and was held on March 18 in the House of Culture of Puyo. Students from seven schools attended the event between 11 am and 1 pm where they spoke from the current global situation on issues such as consumerism, overpopulation, pollution, climate change and so on, until specific issues and closer as illegal hunting and resource extraction in Ecuador. At all times we tried to create a positive vision and a collaborative approach to provide solutions and improve as far as possible the situation.

Our sincere thanks to this institution for their support and help by sending invitations. We look forward with such initiatives in the future and thus raise the inhabitants near the problems we have as well as possible consequences and solutions.

Work on the new site for the Centre

This month we did a lot of construction and today we can say that the most of the structure of houses and bathrooms is finished. So we have the volunteer house, the kitchen and bathrooms to the absence of doors and windows but just some finishing touches left.
In this month also has nearly built the new enclosure for peccaries and the first provisional and expandable capuchin monkeys cage.
In the coming months we expect to go much further and get everything ready for a full move.

Lessons 11 and 12 of Environmental Education

Lesson 11: Energy
On this day we talk to children about what kinds of energy are still used today, mostly based on non-renewable resources, and yet, on the contrary we explain that the best options now and in the future are renewable energy. The day's schedule is as follows -

1) Review the previous class
2) Definition of energy based on practical examples with small experiments, such as pushing a ball; turbine powered by water and wind; match, battery (storage) electrostatic energy of the balloon when you rub the hair.
3) Explanation on how every country uses their natural resources, and particularly in the case of Ecuador.
4) Roll the Dice - 3 dice equals with different designs on all sides, including jokers and questions. Children played in 2 teams and depending on the combination they got, they had to tell what that meant. The first team to reach 10 points won.
5) Twister: drawings offered on the floor as both sources and uses of energy: children had to distinguish between a concept or another and touch either with their hands, feet or any part of their body depending on what they said.
6) Evaluation - true or false - using the recent carnival (which in Ecuador consists of getting dirty), we filled water balloons and bought a spray of carnival to play the "true or false." The game was to ask a question and if the children thought it was true, running in one direction, and if they thought it was false, on the other. One who was wrong would be "whased".
7) Lunch

Lesson 11: Consumption
At present this is a very important issue and in the area are no strangers to it because at the time of changes that they live in rural areas of Ecuador, people are increasingly accessing or sporadic access to all types of goods (eg mobile phones) but no idea how is manufactured and thrown away. Moreover, is very important to teach people to deposit waste in proper places for them.
Scheme:

1) Review the previous day
2) Understanding what the consumption and how it works in the world. Concepts - Responsible consumption; Organic products; Purchase of local products - Game where the kids needed to choose in between several options.
3) The concept of Ecological footprint - giant puzzles for understanding.
4) Responsible Consumption - Activity: Preparing a birthday party as respectful as possible to the environment. - Children should practice the concepts learned.

Improvement in the disinfection system

After some time evaluating the best options available to us, we conclude that to improve the disinfection of materials after entering each cage we should put boots beside each cage for exclusive use in it. In this way we also avoid soil contamination from the cage to the washing area.

New kinkajou

This month we welcomed a new kinkajou at the Centre. The specimen is a female and was brought by our colleagues at the Rescue Centre Yana Cocha, since they could not accommodate at this time.

Conferencia en la Casa de la Cultura de Puyo

Finalmente se cumplió nuestro deseo de realizar un acto para las habitantes de la vecina ciudad de Puyo, capital de la provincia de Pastaza.
La conferencia se tituló: “Tráfico de animales silvestres dentro de la problemática ambiental: actuaciones desde el Centro de Rescate de Fauna Silvestre Sacha Yacu” y fue realizada el día 18 de marzo en la Casa de la Cultura de Puyo. Estudiantes de siete colegios acudieron al evento entre las 11 y la 1 del mediodía donde se les habló desde la situación mundial actual en temas como el consumismo, la superpoblación, la contaminación, el cambio climático y un largo etcétera, hasta temas concretos y más cercanos como la caza ilegal y la extracción de recursos en Ecuador. En todo momento se intentó crear una visión positiva y una actitud de colaboración para aportar soluciones y mejorar en la medida de lo posible la situación.

Nuestros más sinceros agradecimientos a esta entidad por su apoyo y ayuda con el envío de invitaciones. Esperamos poder seguir con este tipo de iniciativas en el futuro y concienciar así a los habitantes de los alrededores de los problemas que tenemos así como de posibles consecuencias y soluciones.

Trabajos en el nuevo emplazamiento para el Centro

En este mes avanzamos bastante con los trabajos de construcción y a día de hoy podemos decir que en la parte de las casas la estructura de los baños está acabada. Con lo cual tenemos la casa de voluntarios, la cocina y los baños a falta de poner puertas, ventanas y dar algunos últimos retoques.
En este mes también se ha construido prácticamente el nuevo recinto de los pecaríes y la primera jaula provisional y ampliable de monos capuchinos.
En los próximos meses esperamos avanzar mucho más y tener todo listo para la mudanza completa.

Lecciones 11 y 12 de Educación Ambiental

Lección 11: Energía
En este día hablamos a los niños sobre las formas de energía que todavía son más utilizadas en la actualidad, la mayoría basadas en recursos no renovables, y sin embargo y por el contrario les explicamos que las mejores opciones desde ahora y en el futuro son las energías renovables. El esquema del día es el siguiente –

1) Revisión de la clase anterior
2) Definición de energía basada en ejemplos prácticos con pequeños experimentos, tales como: el hecho de empujar una bola; turbina que funciona con agua y viento; cerilla, pila (almacenaje); energía electrostática del globo cuando se frota con el pelo.
3) Explicación sobre la forma de usr los recursos de los distintos países, y más concretamente en el caso de Ecuador.
4) Juego de los dados – 3 dados iguales con distintos dibujos en todas sus caras, incluidos comodines y preguntas. Los niños jugaban en 2 equipos y dependiendo de la combinación obtenida nos tenían que contar lo que eso significaba. Ganaba el equipo que antes llegara a 10 puntos.
5) Twister: extendimos en el suelo dibujos tanto de tipos como de usos de energía: los niños tenían que distinguir entre un concepto u otro y tocarlos ya sea con sus manos, sus pies o cualquier parte de su cuerpo dependiendo de lo que se les dijera.
6) Evaluación – verdadero o falso – aprovechando las recientes fiestas de carnaval (que en Ecuador consiste en ensuciarse), llenamos globos de agua y compramos un spray de carnaval para jugar al “verdadero o falso”. El juego consistía en hacer una pregunta y si los niños creían que era verdadero, corrían en una dirección, y si pensaban que era falso, en la otra. Aquel que se equivocara sería “bombardeado”.
7) Almuerzo

Lección 11: Consumo
En la actualidad este es un tema muy importante y en el área no son ajenos a ello ya que en la época de cambios en la que viven las zonas rurales de Ecuador, las gentes tienen cada vez más acceso o acceso esporádico a todo tipo de bienes (ej: teléfonos móviles) pero sin tener idea de lo que supone fabricarlos y desecharlos. Además, aquí es muy importante enseñar a la gente a depositar los desechos en lugares apropiados para ellos.

Esquema:
1) Repaso del día anterior
2) Explicación de lo que es el consumo y cómo funciona en el mundo. Conceptos – Consumo responsable; Productos ecológicos; Compra de productos de la región
3) Concepto de Huella ecológica – puzzles gigantes para el entendimiento
4) Consumo responsable – Actividad: preparación de una fiesta de cumpleaños lo más respetuosa posible con el medio ambiente. – Los niños deben poner en práctica los conceptos aprendidos.
5) Evaluación
6) Almuerzo

Mejoramiento en el sistema de desinfección

Después de un tiempo valorando las mejores opciones a nuestro alcance, llegamos a la conclusión de que para mejorar la desinfección de materiales después de entrar a cada jaula es intentar usar lo menor posible desinfectantes. Por lo cual decidimos poner botas al lado de cada jaula para su uso exclusivo en ella. De esta manera también evitamos la contaminación del suelo desde la jaula hasta la zona de lavado de botas.

Nuevo cusumbo

Este mes acogimos un nuevo cusumbo en el Centro. El ejemplar es hembra y fue traído por nuestros colegas del Centro de Rescate Yana Cocha, ya que ellos no lo podían acoger en estos momentos.

Birth of a baby capuchin monkey

The most important announcement this month at the Centre is the birth of a baby into the ¨potential release¨ Capuchin group.
Immediately one of the female monkeys became the mother’s nurse and helped care for the baby night and day.
The baby was born healthy on January 18th. We don’t know the sex of the baby yet because it spends the whole day on its mother´s back.

We have a vet, finally!

Finally the Centre has the vet that the animals deserve- she will stay at the Centre for 6 months. As was explained before, it is currently impossible to pay a vet to work at the Centre full time. We are very grateful for those who devote their time to this important cause. We are also always searching for more veterinarians, and appreciate donations of time as well as funding. We hope to one day make this a paid position. Thank you in advance!

9th and 10th environmental education lessons

The topics discussed in the past two lessons were “Trade of Plants and Animals” and “Extraction of Natural Resources”.

For the 9th lesson the schedule was:

1) Review of previous lesson
2) Review of simple concepts for the understanding of the systems: habitat; biodiversity; exploitation; trade; extinction
3) Explanation of animal and plant trafficking and the difference between trafficking and trade (with domestic animals)
4) Why are animals and plants trafficked? – Game with the uses of every species
5) Short play where some magical dwarves tell the story about the extinction of the animals in a forest.
6) Brainstormed children´s ideas onto a poster titled “No Illegal Trade in My Country”
7) Evaluation
8) Lunch

For the 10th lesson the schedule was:

1) Review of previous lesson
2) Explanation of the ¨circle of life¨
3) Game – The wheel: the game involved spinning the wheel, which on one side depicted examples of small scale natural resource extraction, and the other side depicting examples of large scale natural resource extraction. The idea that we wanted to emphasize was that though extraction is necessary, we can do it in an environmentally friendly way. We also proposed alternatives and solutions to improve the situation once the resources have been obtained.

Grand Opening of the bonfire place

Last month we finished re-building the thatched area around the bonfire, so now the length is doubled. We’ve also built a place to store the logs and branches for the fire. We celebrated the opening with a barbecue and a relaxing night by the fire.

Enlargement of Tayra’s cage

Thanks to a donation of $200 from our friend Karin Ruhland, we were able to buy 2 rolls of fence to enlarge Tayra’s cage. The new and improved cage is 5 meters longer, 3-4 meters wider and 3 meters higher than the previous.

Speaking of Tayras, on February 6th we were brought a young individual who was caught by some dogs in the neighborhood. After a quick check by our veterinarian, we determined that the tayra miraculously sustained no injuries and was otherwise in good health. After this stressful event, the tayra was fed and spent the night at the Centre before returning to the wild the following morning.

Nacimiento de un bebé capuchino

La noticia más destacada este mes en el Centro ha sido el nacimiento de un bebé en el grupo potencial de liberación de los capuchinos.
Inmediatamente una de las otras monas del grupo se convirtió en ayudante de la mamá y pasó a estar cuidando del bebé día y noche.
El bebé nació sano el 18 de enero y por ahora no sabemos el sexo puesto que sólo está encima de su mamá.

¡Por fin con veterinaria!

Finalmente el Centro tiene la veterinaria que se merece y por un tiempo de 6 meses. Como ya se ha expuesto anteriormente, por ahora se hace imposible para nosotros mantener un puesto remunerado de veterinario a jornada completa aquí. Por lo que mientras tanto agradecemos infinitamente la colaboración desinteresada de amigos que quieran ayudarnos en esta importante labor. También agradecemos cualquier ayuda en la búsqueda de más veterinarios colaboradores o de fondos para mantener un puesto remunerado. Gracias por adelantado.

Novena y décima lección de Educación Ambiental

Los temas que nos ocuparon en estos días fueron: “Tráfico ilegal de animales y plantas” y “Extracción de recursos naturales”.
Para el primer tema el esquema fue el siguiente:

1) Repaso del día anterior
2) Revisión de conceptos simples para el entendimiento de los sistemas: hábitat; biodiversidad; explotación; comercio; extinción
3) Explicación de qué es el tráfico de vida y la diferencia entre traficar y comerciar (para animales domésticos).
4) ¿Por qué se trafican los animales y plantas? – Juego con los usos de cada especie
5) Pequeña representación donde unos enanos cuentan la historia de la desaparición de los animales de un bosque.
6) Cartel titulado “No al tráfico ilegal en mi país” donde se pagaron las frases que los niños pensaron sobre este tema.

8) Almuerzo

Para la décima lección el esquema fue el siguiente:

1) Repaso de lecciones anteriores
2) Explicación del círculo de la vida
3) Juego – La ruleta: el juego consistía en girar una ruleta donde había dibujados varios ejemplos cotidianos de extracción de recursos donde una flecha siempre señalaba una extracción pequeña y otra en la dirección opuesta hacia una extracción a gran escala. El concepto que se quería dejar claro era que la extracción es necesaria, pero se puede hacer de una forma más respetuosa con el medio ambiente o no. Además se propusieron alternativas y soluciones para mejorar la situación una vez que se han obtenido los recursos

Inauguración del espacio para la hoguera

Este pasado mes de febrero ya terminamos la reconstrucción del espacio cubierto de la hoguera resultando en una ampliación del doble de su longitud, con nuevo techo hecho igualmente con hojas y con un espacio donde se pueden colocar los troncos y ramas listos para ser utilizados. Como inauguración se hicieron varias barbacoas y noches al calor del fuego.

Alargamiento de la jaula de la tayra

Gracias a una donación de 200$ de nuestra amiga Karin Ruhland y algo de dinero que el Centro ha puesto, hemos comprado 2 rollos de malla para hacer un alargamiento de la jaula de la tayra. Se ha alargado un total de 5 metros de largo y 4 de ancho. Ahora las medidas totales son de 8 metros de largo x 3-4 metros de ancho (dependiendo del lugar) x 4 de alto.

Hablando de tayras, el día 6 de febrero nos trajeron un ejemplar joven que había sido atrapado por los perros. Tras pasar un rápido examen veterinario para ver si había sufrido alguna herida, pudimos observar que la gente del lugar fue rápida al quitárselo a los perros y el animal estaba en perfecto estado. De esta manera la tayra fue alimentada y pasó la noche en el Centro, tras lo cual fue devuelta a la naturaleza a la mañana siguiente.

In the month of January of this new year:

- 7th and 8th sessions of Environmental Education
- Organic fertilizers
- Re-building of the bonfire place

7th and 8th sessions of Environmental Education

The 7th lesson was about the intensive logging, that is to say, deforestation, and for that our volunteers were divided into 4 groups in order to prepare different scenes. This is the schedule of the day:

- Review of the previous day
- Groups: The 1st talked about the importance of the Amazon rainforest; the 2nd one about some facts and data of deforestation while playing a game; the 3rd was like a workshop to understand what it happens when deforestation occurs. The children had to paint things related to the jungle with their favourite colour and then they saw how all their paintings were destroyed in the same way that their environment is destroyed. We stressed the idea that their ancestors left the jungles and forests for them and now is their turn to conserve them; and the 4th was about finding solutions to solve the problem by asking the kids what we can do.
- To end we played a little representation altogether where the story of a forest and all their inhabitants like plants, animals and humans was told.
- Evaluation

The 8th session was about petroleum and mining industries:

- Review of the previous day
- Explanation about how the petroleum and the minerals are formed.
- Game: Word search in which the kids needed to find words related to these industries.
- Comments about the game, reviewing the good, the bad and both good and bad things that these resources can give to us.
- Video – “Oil in Ecuador: a human energy story” - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1sbXR0QLtvI .

The children could watch what happened in their jungle a few years ago, and that is still there. In the video, with a length of 5 minutes, we could see and listen to the voice of a representative of one of the many affected people.
- Song – After the video, the cover of a famous song with a positive message. One of the volunteers playing the guitar.

Organic fertilizers

Thanks to Leonardo, one of our volunteers who has come to start some specific projects for the Centre. We’ve started with an idea we have had for a long time.

This is to improve the quality of our ground and make it more fertile for cultivating. We can also take advantage of the growing worm population to feed some of the animals.

Re-building of the bonfire place

We also decided to re-build (because the frame was a quite old) and enlarge the area that we usually use for making a fire in the nights. This activity will end next month. In addition, bamboo will be set along a wall so in that way the smoke won’t go into the nearby animal enclosures.
This work includes going to cut different kind of leaves for the ceiling and interweave the ones that will be the support and to cut bamboo and sticks for the posts and fence. Hard work!

Decorating the house and kitchen

We also had time to decorate some communal places so in this way the volunteers can feel like they’re at home. We made a support for the toilet paper in both of the bathrooms; we hanged pictures of animals on every dorms door, so now we have the room of the jaguar, the room of the quetzal, howler monkey room and blue bedbug room; we hanged a cork board in the kitchen as well with pictures and news from the Centre.

Arrival of a vet next month

We’re looking forward to the arrival of Silvia (the vet for the Centre in the next 6 months) in the beginning of February. We really hope this is the start of the possibility to have a full-time vet here with us and with the animals.

En el mes de enero de este nuevo año:

- 7ª y 8ª Jornadas de Educación Ambiental
- Lombricultivo
- Reconstrucción del sitio de la hoguera
- Decorando la casa y la cocina
- Llegada de la veterinaria el próximo mes

7ª y 8ª Jornadas de Educación Ambiental

La 7ª lección trató sobre la tala masiva de árboles, es decir, la deforestación, y para ello nuestros voluntarios se dividieron en 4 grupos para preparar diferentes temas. Este es el esquema del día:

- Revisión del día anterior
- Grupos: El 1º hablaba sobre la importancia de la Amazonía; el 2º sobre algunos hechos y datos sobre la deforestación mediante un juego; el 3º era un taller para entender qué pasaba cuando esto ocurría. En él los niños tenían que pintar cosas relacionadas con la selva con su color favorito y luego veían cómo todos sus dibujos eran detruídos de la misma manera que se destruye su entorno; y el 4º trataba de buscar soluciones al problema preguntando a los niños qué podemos hacer.
- Para finalizar se hizo una pequeña representación conjunta en la que se contaba la historia de un bosque y todos sus habitantes, ya sean plantas, animales o personas.

La 8ª clase trató sobre las industrias de la minería y el petróleo:
- Revisión del día anterior
- Explicación de cómo se forma el petróleo y los minerales.
- Juego: Sopa de letras en el que los niños tienen que encontrar palabras relacionadas con estas industrias.
- Comentarios del juego revisando las cosas buenas, malas y buenas y malas al mismo tiempo que nos pueden aportar estos recursos.
- Vídeo - “Petróleo en Ecuador: una historia de energía humana” - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1sbXR0QLtvI . En él los niños pudieron ver lo que ocurrió en su selva hace unos años, y que todavía está ahí. En el video, de una duración de 5 minutos, pudimos ver y escuchar la voz del representante de unos de los muchos pueblos afectados.
- Canción: Después del video, la adaptación de una canción famosa con un mensaje positivo. A la guitarra por uno de nuestros voluntarios.

Lombricultivo

Gracias a Leonardo, uno de nuestros voluntarios que ha venido a hacer algunos proyectos específicos para el Centro, hemos empezado con esta idea tan esperada para mejorar la calidad de nuestra tierra y de esta manera que sea más fértil a la hora de cultivar. También podemos aprovechar algunas de las lombrices que allí viven para alimento de animales.

Reconstrucción del sitio de la hoguera

También nos decidimos a reconstruir (ya que la estructura ya estaba bastante vieja) y a alargar la zona donde solemos hacer hogueras en la noche. Será una actividad que se acabará el próximo mes. Además se colocarán guadúas (bambú) a lo largo y alto de toda una pared para que el humo no vaya directamente a las jaulas más cercanas de animales.
Este trabajo incluye ir a cortar varios tipos de hojas para el techo, entrelazar las que servirán de soporte a otras; cortar guadúas y palos para postes y vallado. ¡Un duro trabajo!

Decorando la casa

También nos hemos tomado un tiempo para decorar las áreas comunes y que de esta manera los voluntarios puedan sentirse como en su casa. Entre otras cosas hicimos un soporte para el papel higiénico en ambos baños; colgamos fotos de animales en la puerta de cada habitación, de manera que ahora tenemos la habitación del jaguar, la del quetzal, la del mono aullador y la de la chinche azul; también colgamos un corcho en la cocina con fotos y noticias del Centro.

Llegada de la veterinaria el próximo mes

Estamos deseando que llegue Silvia (la veterinaria prara el Centro durante los próximos 6 meses) en los primeros días del próximo mes de febrero. Esperamos de verdad que este sea el comienzo de la posibilidad de tener un veterinario a tiempo completo con nosotros y con los animales.

Day at Miguel Delibes Public School (Spain)

We took advantage of Christmas time, when some of the Sacha Yacu staff were in Spain and didn’t miss the opportunity to visit the three classes of third grade in the primary school at a Public School in Parla, Spain.
We talked about the Centre and our work in order to introduce the children (amazed about what they have just started to learn about animals) into the animal trade issue and also the idea of what they can do about it. There were 2 hours of a very interactive lesson with lots of pictures of our animals and the local way of life; the kids enjoyed this and asked a lot of questions. This time we couldn’t visit the Public School “Rosa Luxemburgo” (who we worked with before); still now the children are asking by e-mail how is everything at the Centre.
It feels great to know that the kids listened to us and can feel concerned with the animals problems, it doesn’t matter if it’s in Ecuador, in Spain, or any other place in the world.

6th lesson of Environment Education at school

This day the lesson was about air, water and noise pollution. The schedule is below:
- Review of the previous day
- Importance of the trees for humans: O2, CO2 and trees.
- Pollution concept and different types of it: the kids had to guess.
- Petroleum: By-products and environmental impact . Story of a plastic bag. Solutions to the problem.
- Game: How long it takes to disappear…?
- Pollution effects: acid rain, hole in the ozone layer, ground pollution. All of these also cause problems to humans.
- Solutions: Reduce, Re-use, Recycle.
- Games: Plastic, and organic wastes relay race; Organic vs. inorganic wastes.

Jornada de Exposición en el Colegio Público Miguel Delibes (España)

Aprovechando las navidades, alguno de los que conformamos el equipo de Sacha Yacu estuvimos en España y no desaprovechamos la oportunidad de visitar las 3 clases de 3º de primaria de un Colegio Público en Parla, España.
Se trató de una exposición sobre el Centro y nuestro trabajo para introducir a los niños (fascinados por lo que empiezan a descubrir sobre los animales) en el mundo de la problemática del tráfico ilegal y en la visión de lo que ellos pueden hacer sobre esto. Fueron 2 horas muy interactivas y con muchas fotos de nuestros animales y de la forma de vida del lugar: los niños disfrutaron y preguntaron mucho. En esta ocasión no se pudo visitar el Colegio Público Rosa Luxemburgo (con el que ya se había trabajado anteriormente), pero todavía hoy los niños siguen preguntando a través de correo electrónico qué tal va todo por el Centro.
Es una gran satisfacción para nosotros poder tener la sensación de que los niños escuchan y se sienten identificados con los problemas de los animales, ya sea en Ecuador, en España, o en cualquier otro lugar del mundo.

6ªJornada de Educación Ambiental

En este día nuestra lección era sobre la contaminación del aire, agua y ruido. El esquema seguido es el siguiente:
- Repaso del día anterior
- Importancia de los árboles para los seres humanos: O2, CO2 y árboles.
- Concepto de contaminación y tipos: los niños tenían que adivinar.
- Petróleo: productos derivados e impacto ambiental - Cuento de una bolsa de plástico. Soluciones para el problema.
- Juego: ¿Cuánto tarda en desaparecer…?
- Efectos de la contaminación: lluvia ácida, agujero de la capa de ozono, contaminación del suelo, etc. Todo esto causa problemas también a las personas.
- Soluciones: Reducir, Reutilizar y Reciclar.
- Juegos: Relevos de plástico, cartón y residuos orgánicos; Residuos orgánicos vs. Residuos no orgánicos.
- Evaluación
- Almuerzo

Paco´s arrival

The month of November has brought with it our friend Paco, a Spanish biologist who will be with us for several months acting as a second coordinator for the Centre. In this way, with this extra help, the staff will have free days. As well, we will be able to make progress with the variety of programs and projects that the Centre leads. Otherwise, and due to the lack of time, these ideas can’t often be done with the speed needed.
Thanks Paco for coming and helping with our daily work, with new projects and ideas too!

New tortoise’s arrival

At the beginning of November the Ministry of Environment called to the Centre to shelter a yellow foot tortoise (Geochelone denticulata). The animal is healthy and is now in her quarantine time.

3rd and 4th day of Environmental Education Program: “Ecosystems and humans: how we are affected by nature´s damage?” And “ Our environment and natural resources – Animals of the surroundings"

The first day at school this month we talked about “Ecosystems and humans: how we are affected by nature´s damage?” This time the idea was that the kids could feel the problems that nature´s damage represents for them too. The difference between previous lessons is that the explanations were focused in the problems of the animals.

1)Previous day review.

2)Description of different ecosystems from other countries (where our volunteers come from).

3) Rosa' story (acted out by volunteers): Rosa is a child who felt ill. When she went to the drug store to get some medicines she couldn’t buy them because there
were neither trees nor plants in the world to make the tablets. When her family tried to fish tasty fishes to make her improve, they found out that the river was contaminated and all the fishes were dead or ill. All these actions are done by humans and we are affected too.4) Demonstration of the oxygen-carbon dioxide system between people, trees and plants – Explanation of the reasons why forests and jungles are so important for us and how the renewal of the oxygen on the planet reduces the pollution at the same time.

5) Contaminate me! – Game where we pretend to show how quick the air is comtaminated. The children are bubbles of oxygen and one of them starts the game acting as the pollution. He/she needs to catch other children who are running around and in that way contaminating them. When a child has been contaminated, they hold hands and continue together to contaminate other children still running about. In 1 minute most of the children were pollution. This demonstrates the speed of contamination.

6) Evaluation

In the 4th day we talked about “Our environment and natural resources – Animals of the surroundings” and we included:

- Review of the previous day.

- Pictures with basic characteristics of some of the animals who live at the Centre and on the surroundings.

- What am I made of? – The kids are shown some items made of different materials. They must recognize this material and the industry in charge of that extraction. Then we showed the damages caused to the environment. We had:

Plastic --> Petroleum industry --> Ground, air and water pollution; Habitats destruction.
Wood --> Logging industry --> Intensive logging that leads to deforestation; Habitats destruction.
Metal --> Mining industry --> Pollution; Habitats destruction.
Cotton --> Clothes industry --> Intensive logging; Habitats destruction; Pollution

- Definition of natural resources.

- Short story (acted out by volunteers): We told the process of a product from the beginning, its extraction from nature, until it is bought and used at home.
- Games:
- Snake comes! – The kids are divided into groups, using names of the animals in the surrounding area. When the snake calls a group, the kids need to try not to be chased. The one who is caught joins the snake.
- Treasure thieves – In 2 groups the children protect a treasure composed of several items made of plastic or wood. When the referee calls a team they have to steal items from the others without being caught, like humans “steal” from nature.

Work on the crops

Thanks again to the collaboration of SECAP (Ecuadorian Service of Professional Training), the inhabitants of “Colonia Bolívar” and the volunteers as well had the opportunity to learn techniques to grow vegetables and fruits on this kind of ground. Someday we would love to set up our own crops and in this way be able to harvest at least a small part of the food for the animals. Obviously, volunteers will have the opportunity to work on this project.

Improvements on the surroundings of the cages

The maintenance work of the month was done on the peccaries’ (as usual) and capuchins’ surroundings. We also organised and cleaned the work area.

Llegada de Paco

El mes de noviembre ha traído consigo a nuestro amigo Paco, biólogo español que durante bastantes meses será como un 2º coordinador para el Centro. Así, contando con esta gran ayuda, el personal en su conjunto podrá tener días libres al mismo tiempo que se podrá avanzar más con los diversos programas y proyectos, que de otra manera y por falta de tiempo no pueden ser realizados en muchas ocasiones con la velocidad necesaria. ¡Gracias Paco por querer venir a ayudarnos tanto con nuestra rutina diaria como con nuevos proyectos e ideas!.

Entrada de una nueva tortuga

A principios de novienbre fue entregada al Centro una tortuga de patas amarillas (Geochelone denticulata) por parte del Ministerio del Ambiente. El animal presenta un estado saludable y se encuentra actualmente pasando su tiempo de cuarentena.

3ª y 4ª jornada de Educación Ambiental: ”Ecosistemas y ser humano: ¿De qué manera nos afecta el daño a los ecosistemas?” Y “Nuestro medio ambiente y recursos naturales – Animales de los alrededores”

En el primer día de este mes hablamos sobre “Ecosistemas y ser humano: “¿De qué manera nos afecta el daño a los ecosistemas?”. La idea era, a diferencia de la lección anterior en la que se incidía en la problemática de los animales, que esta vez los niños entendieran el problema que supone para ellos también este maltrato a la naturaleza. Se propusieron las siguientes actividades:

1) Revisión del día anterior.

2) Descripción de ecosistemas de distintos países (de donde proceden nuestros voluntarios)

3) Historia de Rosa (representada por los voluntarios): Rosa es una niña que un día se puso enferma y cuando fue a la famracia no pdía comprar medicinas ya que no quedaban en el mundo árboles ni plantas parafabricarlas. Cuando su familia fue a pescar para que comiera rico pescado y tratar de que mejorara se encontraron con que le río había sido contaminado y todos los peces estaban muertos o enfermos. Todo esto son acciones causadas por el ser humano y que le perjudica a él mismo.

4) Demostración del funcionamiento del sistema oxígeno-dióxido de carbono en personas y en árboles y plantas - Explicación de por qué los bosques y selvas son tan importantes para nosotros ya que renuevan el oxígeno del planeta a la vez que atrapan contaminación.

5) ¡Contamíname! – Juego en el que se pretende mostrar la velocidad con la que se contamina el aire. Los niños son burbujas de oxígeno y un niño empieza siendo la contaminación. Este tiene que ir cogiendo a más niños que van corriendo a su alrededor y contaminándolos. Entonces todos se van uniendo y pueden contaminar a los demás también. En 1 minuto casi todos los niños eran contaminación.

6) Evaluación.

En la 4ª jornada hablamos sobre “Nuestro medio ambiente y recursos naturales – Animales de los alrededores” y en el día incluímos:

- Revisión del día anterior.

- Fotos con explicación de las características básicas de algunos animales del Centro que viven por estas tierras alrededor de nosotros.

- ¿De qué estoy hecho? – Se les presenta a los niños diferentes objetos hechos de distintos materiales y la industria asociada a la extracción de dicho elemento. Partiendo de ahí se evalúan los daños causados al medio ambiente. Contábamos con:

Plástico --> Industria del petróleo --> Contaminación de tierra, aire y suelo; destrucción de hábitats.
Madera --> Industria maderera --> Tala masiva; deforestación; destrucción de hábitats
Metal --> Industria de la minería --> Contaminación; deforestación
Algodón --> Industria textil --> Tala masiva; deforestación; destrucción de hábitats; contaminación

- Definición de recurso natural.

- Historieta (representada por los voluntarios): Se cuenta el procesamiento de un producto desde su extracción de la naturaleza hasta que lo compramos y lo usamos en casa.

- Juegos:
- ¡La serpiente viene! – Los niños se colocan en grupos representando a alguno de los animales de su entorno. Cuando la serpiente llama a un grupo, ellos tienen que intentar no ser cazados. Quien es cogido, se une a la serpiente.
- Ladrones de tesoros – en 2 grupos los niños protegen “un tesoro” formado por varios objetos de plástico en un lado y de madera en el otro. Cuando el árbitro llama a un equipo ellos tendrán que intentar robar algún objeto de los otros sin ser cogidos, al igual que los humanos “robamos de la naturaleza”.

Trabajo en los huertos

Gracias de nuevo a la colaboración del SECAP (Servicio Ecuatoriano de Capacitación Profesional), los habitantes de la Colonia Bolívar y con ellos los voluntarios pudieron aprender técnicas para cultivar vegetales y frutas en esta tierra. Algún día nos gustaría poner en marcha nuestro propio huerto del que podamos sacar al menos una parte de la comida de los animales del Centro. ¡También los voluntarios podrán colaborar en este proyecto tan deseado!

Arreglos en las inmediaciones de las jaulas y del área de trabajo

El mantenimiento de este mes cnosistió en arreglar los alrededores del recinto de los pecaríes (necesario como siempre), de los monos capuchinos, y ordenar y limpiar el área de trabajo.

Enlargement of the amazon parrots that cannot fly cage

This month we’ve decided to enlarge the cage of the amazon parrots that can’t fly by joining pieces of extra fencing we had at the Centre. Their living space has been increased a total of 2.40 m2. Thanks to all for your patience joining all the pieces! This enlargement has greatly benefited the lives of these parrots because in this way they can now eat quietly away from the others on the additional 5 platforms.
Building a cage for the “free parrots”

Although we don’t like the idea, finally we needed to build a cage for the two mealy parrots that originally lived freely without a cage. The reason is because the squirrel monkeys continually bothered them by pushing them off the branches of the tree. As they can’t fly, were in risk of becoming seriously hurt, so this decision was made. We bought a roll of fence and started the building! Now they are able to live peacefully, without the need to run away or need to defend themselves. If we are around, we always put them outside their cage to enjoy the freedom they are accustomed to.

2nd lesson of Environmental Education – Extinction of species and ecosystems damage

This month, due to the All Saints Day holiday, school was out for one whole week. Therefore the date of the lessons had been modified. The next two lessons have been combined into one theme.
The lesson of the week was about extinction and how the ecosystems could be damaged due to this fact. This was the schedule:

- Review of the previous day

- Basic explanation of the ecosystem concept

- Games to assist children’s understanding and familiarization

- “Jungle calls to…” – In this game the kids are divided into 2 groups (that means 2 different ecosystems) and they’re spread along a queue holding all their hands (that represents that the ecosystems are a group of joined and related elements). From one team they call a child from the other and he/she has to try to go to the other side by breaking the chain, which means, breaking the ecosystem.
If he/she is able to do it, the ecosystem will be damaged and broken and if breaking is not possible, the child will be integrated into the new ecosystem. After the game, the children were asked about the reasons why the ecosystems can be broken and animals become extinct: explanations were discussed.
- Competition in the nature game – This game explains how competition for food in the wild exists and what happens if humans extract natural resources without control: some children were papayas and others were monkeys who had to find papayas to eat. When humans appear and collect some papayas, nothing happens and all the monkeys still have a papaya. When humans collect them without control, the papayas begin to run short and the animals have to fight more to get their food and survive. Finally, they could become extinct.

- Habitats game: In this game the kids make groups which are different habitats and ecosystems. They go throwing the ball, which represents the animals moving from one ecosystem to the other. If the human being is removing places where the animals can live inside the ecosystem (we’re taking kids out of the group and out of the game), animals can find less places to live each time until they become extinct.
- Evaluation (divided in 2 groups: older children and younger children)
We used 2 set of cards with key words and drawings which describe what an ecosystem is and what kind of things damage them. There was a difference between natural damages and damages made by humans.

Works at the new emplacement

The work continues on the lands although sometimes in an intermittent way. This month we’ve advanced a lot and now the kitchen (which posts were set in August) is practically covered. Just the windows left.

Other activities and projects

The search of a veterinarian continues and we are now contacting some of the interested people to see the real possibility of coming to the Centre (when they can come, how many months, conditions, etc). We are positive with this and also with the work placements system because lots of people have asked about this and have sent in their CVs.

As usual, in October we’ve been doing improvements, remodelling and building games for the animals. We also spent an afternoon transplanting bamboo from one place to another because along the new way to the new placement for the Centre, the walls of soil were left without vegetation when the path was opened and the land is now not too stable. Bamboo roots are very strong and good to fix the soil, avoiding possible slides in that way.

In addition, we would like to comment on the possibility of starting a project for the benefit of the Centre and the local people with the Ecuadorian Ministry: MIES (Ministry of Economical and Social Inclusion). Until this date we’ve held two meetings with them to explain our ideas, to show them the place and we wait in anticipation for their opinions, improvements and help. We’ll keep you informed about this.

Ampliación de la jaula de las amazonas que no pueden vuelar

Este mes nos hemos decidido a agrandar la jaula en la que viven las amazonas que no pueden volar con pedazos de malla sin uso. En total su espacio se ha visto incrementado en 2,40 m2 . ¡Gracias a todos por la paciencia al unir todos los pedazos! Esta ampliación ha beneficiado mucho la vida de estos loros, que ahora puede comer tranquilamente y alejados de los demás en cualquiera de los 5 comederos.

Construcción de una jaula para los “loros libres”

Aunque la idea no es de nuestro agrado, finalmente hemos tenido que construir una jaula a la pareja de loras harinosas que vivían fuera. Esto es debido a que los monos ardilla no dejan de molestarlas y empujarlas del árbol. Como no pueden volar, corrían el riesgo de herirse gravemente, por lo que tomamos esta decisión. ¡Compramos un rollo de malla y empezamos la construcción! Ahora pueden vivir sin el estrés de tener que huir o defenderse sin poder volar. Siempre que podemos y estamos alrededor las ponemos fuera como han estado siempre.

2ª lección de Educación Ambiental – Extinción de especies y daño a los ecosistemas

Este mes y debido a la semana entera sin escuela por el Día de todos los Santos, la fecha de nuestra lección fue alterada y con ello también una de las siguientes lecciones, la cual vamos a incluir dentro de otra.
La lección de la semana trataba sobre la extinción de especies y de qué manera los ecosistemas pueden quedar dañados por este hecho. Este es el esquema del día:

- Revisión de la jornada anterior

- Explicación básica del concepto “ecosistema”

- Juegos de comprensión e interiorización
- “Selva llama a...” – Juego en el que los niños se dividen en 2 grupos (representando 2 ecosistemas distintos) y se extienden a lo largo de una fila agarrados de la mano (esto representa que los ecosistemas son un conjunto de elementos unidos y relacionados entre sí). Los de un equipo llaman a alguien del otro equipo y ese niño tiene que ir corriendo e intentar pasar al otro lado rompiendo la cadena, es decir, rompiendo el ecosistema. Si lo consigue, el ecosistema quedará dañado y roto y si no es capaz, se integrará en él. Después se preguntaron y explicaron los motivos de por qué se rompen los ecosistemas y los animales se extinguen.
- Juego de competición en la naturaleza – Este juego explica cómo es en la naturaleza la competición de los animales por la comida qué pasa cuando el ser humano extrae recursos sin control: había niños que representaban papayas y otros tenían el papel de monos que las tenían que encontrar para comer. Cuando aparece el ser humano y va cogiendo algunas papayas, no pasa nada y todos los monos siguen teniendo la suya. Cuando las personas las cogen de una forma desmedida, las papayas empiezan a escasear y los animales tienen que pelear más para conseguir su alimento y sobrevivir. Finalmente pueden llegar a extinguirse.
- Juego de los hábitats: En este juego los niños forman grupos que representan distintos hábitats y ecosistemas. Van lanzando la pelota, que representaría a los animales que se moverían de un ecosistema a otro. Si el ser humano va quitando lugares donde vivir dentro de ese ecosistema (vamos sacando niños de los grupos), los animales cada vez encuentran menos lugares para vivir, hasta su extinción.

- Evaluación (en 2 grupos: niños más mayores y más pequeños)
Utilizamos 2 juegos de tarjetas con palabras y dibujos clave que nos describen qué es un ecosistema y qué cosas lo dañan, separando entre daños naturales y los provocados por el ser humano.

Trabajos en el nuevo emplazamiento

El trabajo coninúa en la finca, aunque a veces de manera un poco intermitente. Este mes hemos avanzado mucho y ahora la cocina (cuyos cimientos fueron puestos en agosto) está prácticamente cubierta. Sólo faltan las ventanas.

Otras actividades y proyectos

La búsqueda de un veterinario continúa y ahora estamos contactando con algunos de los interesados para ver la posibilidad real de venir al Centro (cuándo pueden venir, por cuántos meses, condiciones, etc). Somos optimistas con esto y también con el sistema de prácticas o pasantías ya que mucha gente ha preguntado por ello y nos han enviado sus CV.

Como siempre, en el mes de octubre hemos realizado mejoras, remodelaciones y construcción de juegos para los animales. Además, fuimos una tarde a trasplantar bambú de un sitio a otro ya que en la vía nueva, de camino al nuevo emplazamiento para el Centro, las paredes de tierra quedaron desnudas de vegetación cuando abrieron camino y el terreno no se encuentra muy estable. Las raíces de bambú son muy fuertes y buenas para sujetar la tierra, evitando así posibles delizamientos.

Además, anunciamos la posibilidad de inicir un proyecto para beneficio del Centro y de la gente del lugar con el MIES (Ministerio de Inclusión Económica y Social). Por ahora hemos tenido un par de reuniones con su personal para explicarles nuestras ideas, mostrarles el lugar y recibir gustosos sus opiniones, mejoras y ayuda. Seguiremos informando del desarrollo de los acontecimientos.

Movement of coatis

The new coati finished her quarantine time and was moved into her new home, where we put lots of plants and leaves to make her happy finding insects. Even though, she is too used to people and is always trying to get some strokes and attention from us.

On the other hand, “old” coati was moved into another much bigger cage because in the one where he has always lived he was getting stressed. Now, we can see how he goes up, down, looks for, smells, digs, etc, more freely.

School Program 2010-2011

On September 22nd we started our Environmental Education Program at the “Juan León Mera” School. The day was about the connection between illegal trade and species extiction. Now we’re going to describe the activities done, in which the kids learnt important lessons:

1) Review of the day in July: Domestic animals vs. Wild animals – Summary with changing pictures.

2) What extinction is? – Short definition and game to understand

3) Kids in 2 groups: big ones and little ones – The little ones draw a parrot and the others a monkey, which they play in the game.

4) GAME: Musical chairs – The circle of chairs represents the jungle, where the animals live happy (kids playing)- Everytime the music stops and one of them is left without a chair, it means that he/she has been chased and goes to the airport to been sold outside, or to a house to be a pet. The last kid left is in extinction. First, the big ones play and then the little ones.

5) Reasons for Extinction:
- Taking animals out of the wild
- Slow reproduction rate
- Killig animals for food or to use any of their parts
- Loss of habitats – GAME: With a rope we represent the place where the animals live, their life area.

Everytime the human beings go doing bad things (such as contaminate, intensive logging, intensive and large crops, etc) the space into the rope is getting smaller and smaller because their available area is decreasing. This is going on until the kids (acting like animals) can’t almost move and, or they die, or move to another place where probably they will die too.

6) Food chains - Review “Herbivores/Carnivores/Omnivores”. Simple food chain with 4 elements: People – Ocelot – Mice – Crops. Explanation of how it works and what happens if we kill many ocelots (we break the chain).

7) Story about the area – 2 little stories comparing the way of life in the past (based on the intensive hunt of wild animals to eat) and the present (what has happened because of doing that and how the people live now). The kids performed these simple stories, and for that thay were given something to play their character and/or we painted their faces.

After the lessons, which took about 2 hours, we provided the lunch to the kids, as we said, after every day at the school. Here they are the subjects of the entire Program for this school year.

We are so proud of this achievement that we want to everyone knows about this program because it benefits so much to these people. We consider this activity of highest importance to make sense to the work we do. It is not too difficult to implement this system: just the presence and guidance of someone with experience in education, some money to buy some supplies (and in our case the lunch), the help of dedicated volunteers, and an extra effort to coordinate all the Centre activities is needed.

In September we also were able to publish an advertisement to find a vet for the Centre on a website specialized in Veterinary. The ad was for free, so we’re really grateful to them: thanks veterinaria.org. During 10 days we’ve received 107 applications (and we’re still receiving more): students, vets with experience, retired with lots of energy to help, associations, etc. We are impressed, overwhelmed and very grateful for this reply. We want to get the vet that these animals deserve and also, the next step will be to coordinate a program for work placements where students or just graduated of all around the world can come to learn from the professional who was here by that time. We wish that this could be possible finally and work well.

Release project

The release project for some of our animals was finished and sent to the other part. In that way they can write their functions. When this process is finished, next is submit it to the Ministry of Environment and to the Foundation which would find the funds to do it.

It couldn’t be…

The monkey who was pregnant gave birth finally on Saturday 25th of September. Unfortunately and due to her previous life in captivity, she didn’t know how to take care of the baby properly and she left it a little abandoned because she didn’t know what to do. We did our best, but the situation was really difficult. The baby managed to suck from its mother the first day for 4 times, but during the whole afternoon and evening, it was impossible, so due to the exhaustion and weakness of the baby, we needed to separate one from the other, otherwise it would die. The little monkey got strong again after being fed and it was perfectly the next days, but on Tuesday 28th,it died in about 2 hours. We couldn’t do too much for her. This time couldn’t be possible and that's why we’re really sad. The mother is ok and she didn’t seem too sad when we took her baby.

Finally, we want to say that here everything is ok despite of the politics sometimes. Thanks to all to concern yourself with us.

Traslado de coatíes

El coatí nuevo ya pasó su cuarentena y ya fue trasladada a su nuevo hogar, donde añadimos muchas plantas y hojas de todo tipo para que esté feliz buscando insectos. Aún así, sigue demasiado acostumbrada a las personas y siempre busca caricias y atención por nuestra parte.
Por otro lado, el antiguo coatí fue trasladado a una jaula mucho más grande ya que en la que siempre ha estado estaba empezando a estar estresado. Ahora sí se puede ver cómo sube, baja, busca, huele, cava, etc, con total libertad.

Programa escolar 2010-2011

El día 22 de septiembre comenzamos nuestro programa de Educación Ambiental en la Escuela Fiscal Juan León Mera. La jornada trató sobre la relación entre el tráfico ilegal y la extinción de especies. A continuación se describen las actividades realizadas, en las cuales los niños aprendieron valiosas lecciones:

1) Revisión de la jornada realizada en julio: Animales domésticos vs. Animales salvajes – Repaso con fotos que se mueven

2) ¿Qué es Extinción? – Breve definición y juego de entendimiento

3) Separación de los niños en 2 grupos: grandes y pequeños – los pequeños dibujan un loro y los grandes un mono, los cuales representarán en el juego.

4) JUEGO: Sillas musicales - El corro de sillas representa la selva, donde los animales viven felices (los niños jugando)- Cada vez que para la música y uno de ellos se queda sin silla, significa que ha sido cazado y se va o al aeropuerto para ser vendido al exterior, o a una casa para ser mascota. El último niño que queda está en extinción. Primero jugaron los mayores y después los pequeños.

5) Razones para la Extinción:
- Coger animales de la naturaleza
- Baja tasa de reproducción
- Matar animales para comer o usar alguna de sus partes
- Pérdida de hábitats – JUEGO: Con una cuerda representamos el lugar en el que viven los animales, su espacio de vida. Cada vez que el ser humano va haciendo cosas malas (como contaminar, talar masivamente, cultivar a gran escala, etc), el espacio dentro de la cuerda se va haciendo más y más pequeño porque se reduce su espacio disponible, hasta que los niños (representando a los animales) no se pueden apenas mover y, o mueren, o se van a otro lugar y posiblemente mueran también.

6) Cadenas alimenticias – Revisión “Herbívoro/Carnívoro/Omnívoro”. Cadena alimenticia simple con 4 elementos : Gente - Ocelote - Ratones - Tierras de cultivo. Explicación de cómo funciona y qué pasa si matamos muchos ocelotes (rompemos la cadena).

7) Historia de la zona – 2 historietas comparando la forma de vida del pasado (basada en la caza masiva de animales salvajes para consumo) y el presente (qué ha pasado por hacer eso y cómo vive ahora la gente). Los propios niños representaron estas sencillas historias para lo cual se les dio algún elemento con el que identificar su personaje y/o se les pintó la cara.

Tras la jornada, cuya duración aproximada fue de 2 horas, ofrecimos a los niños el almuerzo, tal y como acordamos, después de cada día en la escuela. Por último se detallan los temas a tratar en el programa completo para el presente curso escolar.

Nos sentimos tan orgullosos de este logro que queremos hacer partícipe a todo el mundo de este programa que tanto beneficia a esta gente. Consideramos esta actividad imprescindible para que la labor que hacemos tenga sentido. No es muy difícil implementar este sistema: sólo se necesita la presencia y guía de alguien con experiencia en la educación, algo de dinero para la compra de algo de material (y en nuestro caso la comida también), la ayuda de voluntarios entregados, y mucho esfuerzo pàra coordinar todas las actividades del Centro.

Búsqueda de veterinario

En septiembre también hemos sido capaces de publicar un anuncio en busca de veterinario para el Centro en una web especializada en Veterinaria. El anuncio fue gratis y por eso le estamos muy agradecidos a veterinaria.org. En un plazo de 10 días recibimos 107 solicitudes de todo tipo (y todavía continúan llegando más): estudiantes, veterinarios con experiencia, retirados con muchas ganas de colaborar, asociaciones, etc. Estamos impresionados, desbordados y muy agradecidos por esta respuesta. Además de conseguir el veterinario que estos animales se merecen, el próximo paso será intentar coordinar un programa de prácticas y pasantías donde estudiantes o recién licenciados de todo el mundo puedan venir a aprender del profesional que esté aquí durante ese tiempo. Esperamos que finalmente esto pueda ser posible y pueda funcionar bien.

Proyecto de liberación

El proyecto de liberación para algunos de nuestros animales fue acabado y enviado para que la otra parte interesada añada sus funciones. Cuando este proceso esté completado, lo siguiente es presentarlo al Ministerio del Ambiente y a la Fundación que buscaría los fondos para poder realizarlo en última instancia.

No pudo ser…

La mona que estaba embarazada finalmente dio a luz el sábado 25 de septiembre. Desafortunadamente y debido a su vida anterior en cautividad, no sabía cómo cuidar bien de su bebé y lo dejaba un poco abandonado porque no sabía qué hacer. Nosotros hicimos todo cuanto estuvo en nuestra mano, pero la situación era difícil. El bebé consiguió mamar de la leche materna durante el primer día en 4 ocasiones, pero durante toda la tarde y al acercarse la noche fue imposible, así que debido al agotamiento y debilidad del bebé, tuvimos que separarlos o de lo contrario moriría. El monito se hizo fuerte de nuevo tras ser alimentado y estuvo perfectamente los días siguientes. El martes 28, el monito murió en unas 2 horas, por lo que poco pudimos hacer por él. Esta vez no pudo ser: sentimos muchísimo esta pérdida. La mamá se encuentra bien y parece que no sintió mucho cuando la apartamos de su hijo.

Para despedirnos queremos decir que todo está bien por aquí, pese a la política en algunas ocasiones. Gracias a todos por la preocupación.

Ocelot release

Without any kind of doubt, the most important thing we did during the last month was to release the ocelot that we rescued from being sold in Puyo. After taking care of it for 2 months, spend lots of energy and about $550 in the building of a suitable cage while it was here with us, and also lots of effort to go and give it its food (remember that the cage was completely isolated in a beautiful place of the new emplacement for the Centre), now we can celebrate that the ocelot was released!!. In colaboration with the Ministry of Environment, which gave us the valuable information of a good place for the releasing into the Llanganates National Park, there we went after a walk of about 4 and a half hours and going up more than 700 metres high through the jungle. He has a chip (the same like cat and dogs) just in case someone found him one day. We all wish him good luck and never again find humans….

Miscarriages and pregnancies

In this month we had a little of everything. One day, one of the female capuchin monkeys appeared in the middle of a puddle of blood in the morning and without a wound. The monkey was perfectly normal, that’s why we thought it wasn’t an internal problem. We remembered soon that thanks to behavioral observation, it was written a mating between her and the second monkey in the hierarchy in mid June, so we think it was a miscarriage. We called the vet to inform and took the monkey out to the quarantine. The blood stopped that day. She was there for 10 days in which she was ok, ate and drank well, and also she seemed a little bored, so she was back to the group again.

On the other hand, we want to announce the happy news of a real pregnant monkey. Our brown capuchin monkey is very pregnant!!. So, lately we are dedicated to the preparation of the cares of the baby just in case she couldn’t do it by herself. We’ll cross our fingers to hope everything is ok!

Organized group of volunteers

Also, this month we received our first organized group of people, which it was good to go ahead with the Centre because of their physical and financial help. We bought lots of building materials to almost finish the new kitchen and bathrooms. The experience was really good and the “usual volunteers” had also the opportunity of joining to the group discussions which were managed for their own coordinator. They learnt there about environmental and human issues in Ecuador and many other things. Thanks guys for coming here!

Making chocolate from cacao and pottery workshops

In addition, we managed 2 workshops: one about making chocolate from cacao belonging to here, and the other to know how to do local pottery. In the first one, the volunteers could experienced the whole process from the harvest of cacao to the chocolate ready to put into hot milk. The pottery was also very nice and the volunteers could open their imagination and invent new shapes and designs (many of them related to their favourite animals at the Centre!). Since now, we are thinking of the idea of taking advantage of the local knowledge and continue with these courses for volunteers because it’s a great thing for everyone.

Second course to learn how to work with wood for people of the community

The first course has been so successful that the local community have been given with the rest of courses to know all about carpentry and in the future be able to create a business altogether.
Some people could think that in that way they’ll start to cut more wood but the reality is that the most of these people need to cut some wood from their lands to pay major expenses like their children education (very expensive here). With this we’re not encourage them to cut more trees: we just want them to know how to make something like a bed, a chair, a door, or a piece of furniture. In that way they can earn more money than just selling the logs or planks to big companies which make the real business.

Story of a coati

The other day, we were doing the shopping in the market as usual, when we started to talk with a friend who works there, then he told us about the arrival of a coati to his house one week ago. He wanted to bring it to the Centre so in that way it could have a better life, and so he did. In his free day he came with a beautiful young coati female, completely tame. They came by bus and just with a leash, but she stole a piece of chicken and some chips from the passengers!. Now it’s in quarantine and although she is healthy (despite of the mark of a leash on her back). The faecal exam revealed a few parasites. Externally, she has some flees. She is getting used to a new diet because it seems like she was just fed with the rests of food from the house and now the only two things she wants to eat they are cooked chicken and egg….. Also, we need to spend some time playing with her everyday now because she really miss being in contact with humans.

Liberación del ocelote

Sin duda alguna, lo más importante que hemos hecho este mes de agosto es liberar al ocelote que rescatamos de ser vendido en Puyo. Después de cuidar de él durante 2 meses, gastar mucha energía y alrededor de 550$ en la construcción de una jaula adecuada mientras estuviera con nosotros, y tras mucho esfuerzo en ir a darle de comer (recordamos que la jaula estaba completamente aislada en un bonito lugar del nuevo emplazamiento para el Centro). ¡¡Ahora podemos celebrar que el ocelote fue liberado!!
En colaboración con el Ministerio del Ambiente, quien nos proporcionó la valiosa información de un buen sitio para su liberación en el Parque Nacional Llanganates, allá fuimos tras una caminata de 4 horas y media y tras subir más de 700 metros por la selva.
Se le colocó un chip (el mismo que se les pone a perros y gatos) en caso de que algún día alguien lo encuentre y podamos saber quién es. Todos le deseamos buena suerte y que no vuelva a encontrarse con el ser humano nunca más….

Abortos y embarazos

En este mes hemos tenido un poco de todo. Un día, una de las monas capuchinas apareció por la mañana en medio de un charco de sangre y sin ninguna herida. La mona estaba perfectamente normal, por lo que descartamos que tuviera un problema interno.. Pronto recordamos que gracias a la observación de este grupo, estaba anotada la cópula entre ella y el segundo macho en la jerarquía a mediados de junio, por lo que pensamos en un aborto. Rápidamente llamamos al veterinario para informar y sacamos a la mona a la cuarentena. El sangrado paró ese mismo día, aunque estuvo allí durante 10 días en los que se encontraba bien, comía y bebía bien, y ya parecía un poco aburrida, por lo que se la volvió a introducir en su grupo.

Por otro lado, tenemos que anunciar la feliz noticia de que hay una mona realmente embarazada. Nuestra mona capuchina negra está embarazadísima. Así que últimamente nos dedicamos a la preparación de los cuidados del bebé en caso de que ella no pudiera ocuparse de él. ¡Cruzaremos los dedos para que todo salga bien!

Grupo organizado de voluntarios

También este mes recibimos nuestro primer grupo organizado de gente, lo cual fue bueno `para avanzar con el Centro tanto con su ayuda física como con su aporte económico. Compramos muchísimos materiales para así poder dejar casi acabada la nueva cocina y los baños. La experiencia fue muy buena y los voluntarios “normales” también tuvieron la oportunidad de unirse a las discusiones de grupo que ellos hacían con su coordinadora sobre temas ambientales y humanos de Ecuador.¡Gracias chicos por participar con nosotros!

Cursos de fabricación de chocolate a partir de cacao, y cerámicas

Además, con el grupo hicimos 2 talleres: uno sobre la fabricación de chocolate a partir del cacao de aquí, y otro para aprender a hacer cerámicas de la zona. En el primero los voluntarios pudieron experimentar todo el proceso completo desde la cosecha del cacao hasta ver el cacao hecho en forma de chocolate para mezclar caliente con la leche. La experiencia de las cerámicas también resultaró muy enriquecedora y ahí los voluntarios pudieron desplegar su imaginación e inventar nuevas formas y diseños (¡muchos relacionados con sus animales favoritos del Centro!). Desde ahora, pensamos en la idea de aprovechar el conocimiento de la gente del lugar y continuar con estos talleres para los voluntarios en el tiempo ya que es un beneficio para todos.

Segundo curso para para aprender a trabajar con la madera para la gente de la comunidad

El primer curso ha tenido tanto éxito que a la comunidad le han dado la totalidad de cursos para aprender carpintería y de esa manera poder hacer un pequeño negocio juntos en el futuro.
Alguna personas podrían pensar que de esa manera empezarán a cortar más madera pero la realidad es que la mayoría de esta gente necesita cortar algo de madera de sus tierras para pagar gastos mayores como la educación de sus hijos (muy cara aquí). Con esto no les estamos animando a que corten más árboles: sólo queremos que aprendan a hacer algo como por ejemplo una cama, una silla, una puerta o un mueble. De esa manera ellos mismos pueden ganar más dinero que vendiendo tocones o tablas a grandes compañías, las cuales son las que hacen el verdadero negocio.

Historia de un coatí

El otro día estábamos comprando en el mercado como siempre, cuando empezamos a hablar con un amigo que trabaja allí, entonces nos dijo que hacía 1 semana había llegado un coatí a su casa y se había quedado allí. Él quería traerlo al Centro para que viviera mejor, y así hizo. Por lo que en su día libre vino con una preciosa hembra joven de coatí, totalmente domesticada. En el bus la trajo sólo con una correa, aunque eso sí, ¡en el camino se robó una pieza de pollo y algunas papas de los pasajeros!. Ahora está en la cuarentena y aunque está en muy buen estado (excepto por la marca de una correa en sus cuartos traseros), el examen coprológico reveló que tiene algún parásito. Externamente tiene algunas pulgas. También está en proceso de adecuarse a una nueva dieta puesto que parece ser que sólo ha comido las sobras de la casa y lo único que quiere comer ahora es pollo cocinado y huevo…. Además, por ahora tenemos que pasar algún tiempo jugando con ella cada día porque extraña mucho el contacto humano.

Environment educational day at the school

One of the objectives of Sacha Yacu Rescue Centre is be able to do Environment Education, and specially focused in wild animal problems in Ecuador. This is no so easy for us because just the work at the Centre is quite hard and keep us busy the most of the time.

Despite of this, we could prepared this desired day. On July 15 and taking advantage of our several volunteers with a good level of Spanish knowledge (in that way not all the translation work was for the Centre staff), we prepared a range of comments, games and representations for children at local school. The main matter was “Wild animals vs. Domestic animals”.

The idea was start with this basic thing because here is very difficult to know due to people is used to own animals from the jungle. Also, the age of the 32 kids which were there is between 6 and 12 years old: altogether in the same classroom due to the lack of money and teachers on the area. It was a challenge to make understand to all at the same time what we wanted to explain.

After this, we divided the kids into 2 groups (young and older ones) in order to visit the Centre (but the animals to release) and explain the problems of ther animals to them in situ. At the end, a small lunch.
Children, volunteers, teachers and the Centre staff spent a great time and we think we got the objectives for that day. The teacher said to us that he would love to set a environment education programme for the new school year (as we proposed before) where we maybe could go twice per month. He added that other teachers along the road wanted to participate too. In the future we will inform about all the open possibilities. Many thanks to the volunteers for their enthusiasm and help for that day!!

Course for people of the community: how to work with wood

This month we started activities with the community too in order to improve their quality of life and try to provide them with some options to get some money. The Centre, with Colonia Bolívar, place where is located, sent an application to SECAP of the Pastaza province asking professional people to teach a carpentry course.
In this way, people from the community (mostly very poor people) have more options to make their living if they want designing and making furniture on a small scale like an alternative for the rest of people to buy them in Puyo, where in too many cases they come from big industries.
For that, we lent our cutting wood machine, and some others, and also, the help of Centre staff who has made some carpentry works in the past and was the teacher’s helper.
With the presence of members from every family of the community at the course, all of them agreed in asking the totality of carpentry courses in order to get their certificate and try to make a small business altogether in the future. We will borrow our machines every time they need them.

New volunteer’s house works – Continue

Just to mention that we continue working there. The work is sometimes harder than others and this month we were mostly carrying rocks from the river to build the floor of the bottom floor.

Enrichment and maintenance of the cages

As usual, after cleaning and feeding and some afternoons, the volunteers put more and new leaves and branches into the cages, designed and built new games for the animals and built new shelters when needed, like it happened to peccaries: they needed a new “house” on the other side of their enclosure.

Margay’s tail is recovering little by little, so we are very happy.

Information

Sacha Yacu has been always very sincere in the newsletters. We write everything that happen at the Centre: the good things (our improvements and achievements) and also the bad things (such as when an animal gets ill or even die). But due to a recent event since now we will keep on our own some information that will be available just for the Ministry of Environment and for the authorities. In this way, people with no so good intentions will not be able to use those data against us and in their own benefit.
At the same time, we encourage all the Rescue Centres and places with related activities to show the whole world (because they are non-profit Organisations) the good things, the bad things and all the expenses in detail (how much they are spending and the porpose), the same as Sacha Yacu does on the website.
In October we will be able to upload all the accounts since April and to the date because during this time our webmaster was travelling through places without a good connection to internet or any connection at all.

Jornada de educación ambiental en la escuela

Uno de los objetivos del Centro de Rescate Sacha Yacu es poder realizar Educación Ambiental, y orientada especialmente a la problemática de los animales silvestres en Ecuador. Esto no es tan fácil para nosotros ya que sólo el trabajo en el Centro es bastante duro y ocupa prácticamente todo nuestro tiempo.
Aún así, por fin fuimos capaces de preparar este día tan deseado. El día 15 de julio y aprovechando que teníamos varios voluntarios con un buen nivel de español (para que de esta manera no todo el trabajo de traducción recayera sobre el personal del Centro), hicimos un hueco en nuestra apretada agenda y preparamos una serie de comentarios, juegos y representaciones para los niños de la escuela local. El tema principal sobre el que giraba todo no podía ser otro que “Animales silvestres vs. Animales domésticos”.
La idea era empezar con una cosa tan básica como esta ya que aquí es muy difícil de saber en algunas ocasiones debido al grado de acostumbramiento de la gente a tener animales que pertenecen a la selva. Además, la edad de los 32 niños que asistieron en total al evento está comprendida entre 6 y 12 años: todos juntos en la misma clase debido a la falta de medios materiales y de profesores en esta área. Todo un reto para hacer comprender a todos a la vez lo que queríamos explicar.

Después de esto, dividimos a los niños en 2 grupos (mayores y pequeños) para visitar el Centro (a excepción de los animales que se podrán liberar) y explicarles in situ la problemática. Por último un pequeño almuerzo.
Los niños, los voluntarios, los `profesores y el personal del Centro disfrutamos muchísimo y creemos que se cumplieron los objetivos para ese día. El profesor nos indicó que le encantaría implantar un programa de educación ambiental para el nuevo curso, (tal y como le propusimos) en el que pudiéramos ir a hacer actividades quizá 2 veces al mes. También nos comentó que a otras escuelas de la vía también querían participar. Más adelante informaremos de todas las posibilidades que se nos abren.
¡¡Muchas gracias a los voluntarios por su entusiasmo y ayuda!!

Curso para aprender a trabajar con la madera para la gente de la comunidad

Este mes también iniciamos actividades con la comunidad con el fin de mejorar su calidad de vida y tratar de darles algunas opciones para que consigan algo de dinero. El Centro, en conjunto con la Colonia Bolívar, lugar donde se sitúa, envió una solicitud al SECAP (Servicio Ecuatoriano de Capacitación) de la provincia de Pastaza pidiendo personal competente para enseñar un taller de carpintería y mueblería. De esta manera, la gente de la comunidad, gente bastante pobre en su mayoría, tiene más opciones de ganarse la vida si es que lo desean diseñando y fabricando muebles a pequeña escala como alternativa para el resto de gente a comprarlos en las tiendas de Puyo que en muchos casos provienen de grandes fábricas.
Para ello, prestamos nuestra máquina de cortar y cepillar madera, y algunas otras más, y además también la ayuda de personal del Centro quien ha realizado algunos trabajos de carpintería anteriormente y fue como el ayudante del profesor.
Con representación de todas las familias que conforman esta comunidad en el taller, todos estuvieron de acuerdo en pedir la totalidad de cursos de mueblería para así conseguir su título y en el futuro intentar hacer un pequeños negocio todos juntos. Por nuestra parte, prestaremos nuestras máquinas cuantas veces haga falta para ellos.

Tan sólo mencionar que seguimos con el trabajo allí. Este es unas veces más duro que otras y la mayor parte del mes estuvimos cargando piedras desde el río para hacer el suelo de la planta de abajo.

Enriquecimiento y mantenimiento de jaulas

Como siempre, después de limpiar y dar de comer y algunas tardes, los voluntarios ponen nuevas hojas y ramas en las jaulas, diseñan y crean nuevos juegos para los animales y contruyen nuevos refugios cuando es necesario, como en el caso de los pecaries, los cuales necesitaban una nueva “casa” en el otro lado de su recinto.

Mejoría del margay

La cola del margay está recuperando su pelo poquito a poco, por lo cual estamos muy contentos.

Información

Sacha Yacu siempre se ha caracterizado por su sinceridad en los boletines de noticias. Escribimos todo lo que pasa en el Centro, tanto lo bueno (nuestros avances y logros) como lo malo (como por ejemplo cuando un animal se enferma o se muere). Pero debido a un reciente acontecimiento, de ahora en adelante nos reservaremos cierta información que estará disponible sólo para el Ministerio del Ambiente y las autoridades correspondientes. De esta manera, gente malintencionada no podrá usar esos datos en nuestra contra y en su propio beneficio.
A la vez, invitamos a todos los Centros de Rescate y Centros de actividades relacionadas a que muestren a todo el mundo (puesto que son Organizaciones sin ánimo de lucro) lo bueno, lo malo, y las cuentas detalladas del dinero que están gastando y en qué, al igual que hace Sacha Yacu en su web.
En octubre podremos poner los informes de todas las cuentas desde abril y hasta la fecha, ya que durante este tiempo nuestro webmaster se encontraba de viaje por lugares sin buena o ninguna conexión a internet.

New wild cat

The most remarkable thing that happened this month is the non-expected arrival of a wild cat to the Center.

We have all known for a couple of months that there was a cat around the area. We knew this because some people from the surroundings were complaining about it; their chickens were killed during the night. We were afraid that someone would hunt it and kill it or try to sell it. And that’s what happened; one day we found someone who hunted it and was going to Puyo, probably in order to sell it. We were able to convince them not do this by saying that this was a bad idea and that the police would stop them and take it. In that way, they decided it was better to leave it here.

The animal is completely wild, and so our first thought was to release it, of course. But the first problem is that cats need a really large living area, and even walking it into the jungle for 2 or 3 hours, there are small communities that make their living hunting and harvesting. Also, the animal is now used to getting close to people in order to eat chickens, so it’s too dangerous right now. This was a difficult decision because its not a baby, and its used to being free. In addition, our financial constraints were an issue because the fence we needed was quite expensive. Finally, we decided to build a cage with urgency where the new site for the Center is.
So unexpectedly, it is the first inhabitant there. It took about 10 days of really hard work because in the mornings we cleaned, fed, fixed and built here, and in the afternoons we went down to work on its enclosure. We are very grateful to our volunteers for this immense effort and a job well done!!

After telling the Ministry of Environment about the situation, they said to us that it is okay, and they are considering the possibility of moving it into Llanganates National Park where they afirm it could live quietly.We will inform you of the progress.

Work on the new volunteer house

In this month we continue with the work on the new volunteer house, although due to the wild cat arrival it was a little delayed.

The house is made of wood, as is the tradition here for the buildings, We were busy making small planks and then hammering them between every bigger plank in order to make sure that there are no gaps and also as a decoration. When there were a considerable number of little planks set in there, some volunteers started to paint the house. Next month we hope to finish it, and in that way, start with the bathrooms.
Observation of the potencial animals for releasing

We have started some new projects this month, such as the scientific observation of these animals: we started by the capuchins group because we were placing them all together and we wanted to note the relationships at the same time as the group was taking shape. The first days were critical, and we did 2 daily observations. One about feeding time and the other in the afternoon. The time spent watching is about 45 minutes, and we note down each one´s skills, and also within the group: relationships between each monkey and with their environment, time and space use and in general, any relevant thing to help determine how they are doing.

A couple of weeks afterwards we started with the observation of coati and a group of parrots as well.

New garbage system

It was our wish to be able to separate and do something good with the garbage at the Centre because here, in the middle of the jungle you don’t have many options. We were informed that since not too long ago, there is a truck removing all kind of garbage from El Triunfo (a close community) in order to take it to Puyo. This waste is not for recycling because in Ecuador there is not a good classification process. At least in this way, plastics, glass and cans don’t get stuck here. Our thought is to rent a car from a neighbor once a month in order to take all the boxes there.
Margay’s recovery

Tests for the lack of fur on the tail said that it is not because of either fungus or bacteria. Therefore, the only option is taking a blood sample to test it. This is not so simple in Ecuador because we were told that just 1 laboratory is for animal tests in Quito. Luckily, our margay is good despite her tail. We will continue inform you.

Release project progress

The progress is really slow due to several reasons such as the research of different prices to finish the budgets, the amount of work waiting there to be done and also because of other kinds of sudden situations. Despite this, we’re confident in finishing soon and trying other possibilities.

Nuevo felino

Lo más sorprendente que ha ocurrido este mes ha sido en los primeros días, con la llegada inesperada de un nuevo felino al Centro.
Por todos era sabido que desde hacía un par de meses andaba un felino por la zona. Sabíamos esto porque algunas personas de los alrededores se quejaban ya que por la noche mataba a sus gallinas. Teníamos miedo de que alguien lo cazara y matara o intentara venderlo. Y efectivamente, un día nos encontrams que alguien lo había cogido y lo llevaban al Puyo, probablemente para venderlo. Conseguimos convencerles de que eso no era bueno y que además, la policía les pararía y se lo quitarían. De esa manera, decidieron que nos lo quedáramos aquí.

El animal es completamente salvaje y por eso, nuestro primer pensamiento fue la liberación, por supuesto. Pero el primer problema con el que nos encontramos es que los felinos necesitan un área de vida realmente grande, y aún llevándolo varias horas dentro de la selva, siempre hay pequeñas comunidades aisladas que se dedican principalmente a la caza y la agricultura. Además, el animal está ahora acostumbrado a acercarse a las poblaciones para comer los pollos y gallinas, con lo cual es demasiado arriesgado en este momento. Fue una decisión difícil de tomar, ya que no es un bebé y está acostrumbrado a ser libre. Además, debido también a nuestras limitaciones económicas: la malla necesaria para él es bastante cara. Finalmente, y por el momento, decidimos construir una jaula con urgencia en el nuevo emplazamiento para el Centro, así que inesperadamente él es el primer habitante allí. Llevó alrededor de 10 días de durísimo trabajo ya que por las mañanas limpiábamos, dábamos de comer, arreglábamos y construíamos cosas aquí. Y por las tardes bajábamos a trabajar en su jaula. ¡¡Estamos muy agradecidos a nuestros voluntarios por este inmenso esfuerzo y el buen trabajo realizado!!

Tras comentar la situación al Ministerio del Ambiente, nos comunicaron que por ahora está bien, y están trabajando en la posibilidad de movilizarlo al vecino Parque Nacional de Llanganates donde afirman que podría vivir tranquilamente. Informaremos de cualquier novedad.

Trabajo en la nueva casa de voluntarios

En este mes de junio por fin reanudamos de nuevo los trabajos en la nueva casa de voluntarios, aunque debido a la llegada del felino se ha retrasado un poco.
La casa es de madera, material con el que se construye aquí tradicionalmente. Estuvimos ocupados haciendo, y después clavando tablillas entre tabla y tabla para asegurar que no quede ningún hueco y además a modo de adorno. Cuando hubo un número considerable de tablillas colocadas, algunos voluntarios empezaron a pintar la casa. En el mes de julio esperamos terminar y de esa manera empezar con los baños.

Observación de animales potenciales para liberación

Hemos abierto algunos nuevos proyectos en este mes, como es el caso dela observación científica de estos animales: empezamos por el grupo de capuchinos puesto que todavía estábamos poniendo a todos juntos y queríamos anotar sus interrelaciones conforme el grupo se iba modelando. Los primeros días fueron los más críticos e hicimos 2 observaciones diarias: una a la hora de la comida y otra por la tarde. La duración es de aproximadamente 45 minutos y se anota sus habilidades tanto en solitario como en grupo; relaciones interespecíficas y con su entorno; el uso del tiempo y del espacio y en general cualquier cosa de relevancia para determinar cómo están pogresando.
Un par de semanas después empezamos también con la observación del coatí y el grupo de loros.

Nuevo sistema de basuras

Era nuestro deseo poder separar y hacer algo con la basura generada en el Centro ya que aquí, en medio de la selva, no hay muchas opciones. Así que nos informaron de que desde hace no mucho tiempo, existe un camión recogiendo toda clase de basuras en la parroquia cercana de El Triunfo para llevarlas a Puyo. Estos desechos no son para reciclar, puesto que en Ecuador no hay un buen sistema de clasificación instaurado. De esta manera al menos los pásticos, cristal y latas no se van acumulando aquí. Nuestra idea es alquilar un carro al vecino 1 vez al mes para llevar todas las cajas de basura allí.

Recuperación del margay

Los resultados veterinarios para la falta de pelo en la cola nos dicen que no es causado por hongos ni por bacterias. Con lo cual la única opción que nos queda es tomar una muestra de sangre para analizar. Esto no es tan sencillo aquí en Ecuador puesto que según nos han dicho, sólo 1 laboratorio en Quito trabaja en análisis para animales. Por suerte, nuestro margay no se encuentra mal a pesar de su cola. Seguiremos informando.

Progreso del Proyecto de Liberación

El progreso está siendo muy lento debido a la indagación de precios para completar los presupuestos y debido también a la acumulación de trabajo y a otras situaciones inesperadas. Aún así, tenemos confianza en poder terminarlo dentro de poco y confiar en nuestras posibilidades.

New area for the garbage

We start this newsletter with a not very nice activity but neccesary. We’re talking about the construction of a new area for our garbage. For doing that, we needed to dismantle the old frame of the first fruit shed for the Centre and re-build a new place for storing while using the most of the old zinc we had around.

Big capuchins cages

We took advantage of the old, but good planks from the dismantled cage to repair the communal houses of big capuchins cages. We also did more environmental enrichment by hanging big branches with leaves and putting many posts and branches in every cage. We could finish by putting the little individual houses up for everyone too!!

Improvement of the steps to the margay

Continuing the improvement of the trails around the Centre, we fixed the steps to the margay because they were a little dangerous.

New toys for the capuchins and planks for the bird´s nuts

This month, volunteers thought about some games made from wood in which they drilled holes.The idea was to put some honey inside the box with sticks in the holes in which they can get the honey with. After the many attempts, they were able to search for a stick to get it, but the capuchins found it easier to try putting their hand into a hole in the box!
Also, we put some planks where we put the nuts for the birds in the 2 cages that can fly. For the amazon parrots, the nuts can be left outside. We won’t have so many problems when you enter with the nuts (they love it) and they all try to fly to you: they are eating quietly now.

New trap cage for the tayra

The Tayra knows now how to break the plastic cages for transporting animals in which we put him in while cleaning his cage. We built a new one with a fence into the ground so he can enter easily.

Peccaries: improvement of the water bowl and new pool

The frame where we put the water bowl for the peccaries was broken and it was necessary to build other similar and accesible to the smallest peccaries. We took advantage of it and dug into the ground and make a mud pool for them.

New entrance door for the coati and red macaws

We were a little tired of the difficulty to entering the coati’s cage. In addition, the door itself was quite old. One afternoon we made a new door and we put it in a different place, just close to the trap cage. Red macawas have a new door too, but this continues at the same place.

Enlargment of Tina/Tre’s cage

Tina/Tre has now 3 of the 6 places in the quarantine, one more than before. When we start to build the new cages at the new placement for the Centre, which will be very soon, she finally will have the space she deserves.

Building Songo a new cage

Songo’s cage was so old that everyday she made a new hole in it and soon was outside. If we can, we always put her outside, but this is not good when we’re not around. Therefore, we needed to think about buying some new fence for a new cage.
We talked about this idea as part of the coming week work and one of our volunteers, Elisabeth, decided to buy that fence as a donation for the Centre. She came with us to do the shopping and she added a new good quality shovel. The total of the funds donated was $98,94. $81,24 for 50m of fence and $17,70 for the shovel. Thank you very much Elisabeth! Now Songo has a beautiful cage where she is spending the time when she cannot be outside.

Help in harvesting cacao

This month the cacao trees were full of fruits and local people asked for help to collect them. We helped in picking them from the trees and cutting it to separate pieces so the seeds can dry afterwards. Here in the Amazon rainforest, the Government did courses to teach people how to grow their own cacao to sell it. In this way, they have other source of incomes.

Margay’s progress

As we announced before, the margay is completely recovered of her illness. She weighed 2,25kg when she started the treatment and now she weghs 3kg. Now there is another different problem, she Is missing some fur on her tail. (A volunteer vet gave her opinion to us about possible fungus infection) and we decided to call the vet to check it. We will know next month…

Purchase of the wood cutting machine

The Centre has always needed to buy planks for building, both for animals and for our houses. So we thought it was time to buy a wood cutting machine. This was necessary with the movement of the Centre so we can save money in the future. We waited for some savings and finally we got it!

Widening of the animal info at the kitchen

We continue putting up more details in the kitchen about our animals for volunteers. We want all the species represented. There are just a few left to complete all the basic info. We hope we can, and maybe with volunteers help , put every kind of info up with more specific details.

First salary in many months

Since May, June, July and August the Centre is going well, we have made the decision to receive our first salary. The amount resolved is $200 each worker. This is for covering basic expenses and some other things. Until now we got some money from the Centre in order to cover basic food and transportation to Puyo for shopping. If some money was needed to buy some special thing such as new shoes because the old ones were torn, of course the Centre paid. In the next months we’ll see how the situation is and if it’s possible to earn more money. At Sacha Yacu, we think that every worker needs to receive a fitting salary to make their living and save in the future, although in too many times, this is difficult to get.

Release project

We’re very happy to announce that we continue the release project and are moving forward step by step. Next step is to write a really good proposal to the Organisation which will help us: in this, it must show all that what we want to do, with a calendar in mind and a plan where it’s shown the budgets during the process. This is a wonderful news, at the same time its hard work! So we will infrom you about our progress.

Sad goodbye

Continuing with our bad luck, we need to talk about a difficult issue: is really sad for us to say that Lluvia died. In the night of 23rd she was left outside the kitchen to spend the night and next morning she was found dead in peccaries enclosure. We can copy here the letter written for her on facebook group:

Dear Lluvia,
We only want to let you know as much as we loved you, although we think you knew. We will miss your miaus every time we opened the fridge or the cupboard door; the way in which you said hello over the door when we opened the kitchen in the mornings; as much as you loved the milk, and the bread; how you wanted to enter the toilet when someone entered and then you put your little leg in, under the door, calling. We will miss you.
Specially Benji. You taught him the most of the things he know because you were the firt one in trying them. Then he went after you. You made a perfect couple and now he has not anyone to play with.

We loved how affectionate you were, and also confident. That is why early in the morning you decided to go to play with the peccaries. Probably you thought that they were your friends and you let them get close to you. But they do not understand that you only had curiosity and wanted to play.
Although they were other cats here one day, it never will be the same.
We love you, rest in peace.

Thanks to all and special thanks to Jasmin, who had to leave before time (2 months before). You are a lovely person and a hard worker. We know how much you loved the Centre, so we hope that you can return someday. We miss you. Thank you.

Nueva zona para la basura

Comenzamos este boletín con una actividad no muy agradable, pero necesaria. Estamos hablando de la construcción de una nueva zona para nuestra basura. Para ello desmantelamos la vieja estructura de la primera bodega de frutas que tuvo el Centro y rehicimos un nuevo sitio de almacenamiento utilizando la mayor parte del zinc viejo que teníamos.

Jaulas grandes de capuchinos

Aprovechamos las viejas, pero buenas tablas del desmantelamiento para reparar las casas comunales de las jaulas grandes de capuchinos. También hicimos mucho enriquecimiento ambiental colgando grandes ramas con hojas y poniendo numerosos postes y ramas en cada jaula. ¡¡También conseguimos acabar de poner las casitas individuales para todos!!

Mejora de los escalones que van hacia el margay

Continuando con la mejora de los caminos alrededor del Centro, arreglamos los escalones que van hacia la jaula del margay porque ya empezaban a ser peligrosos.

Nuevos juguetes para capuchinos y soportes para poner el maní de las aves

Este mes, los voluntarios pensaron en algunos juguetes hechos de madera en los que hicieron agujeros. La idea era poner miel dentro y unos palos con los que ellos podían alcanzarla. Tras unos primeros intentos, fueron capaces de buscar algún palo para conseguirla, ¡`pero encontraron más fácil intentar meter la mano por un hueco que quedó en la caja!
También pusimos soportes donde poner el maní en las 2 jaulas de aves que vuelan. Para las amazonas se puede poner desde afuera, con lo cual ya no hay tanto problema cuando se entra con el maní (que les encanta) y tratan de volar hacia las personas: ahora estarán comiendo tranquilamente.

Nueva jaula de manejo para el cabeza de mate

El cabeza de mate ha aprendido a romper las jaulas de plástico para transportar animales en las que le ponemos mientras limpiamos su jaula, así que construimos una nueva con malla y cavamos en la tierra para asentarla ahí y que pueda entrar fácilmente.

Peccaries: mejora del lugar del bebedero y nueva piscina

La estructura donde se coloca el bebedero de los peccaries se rompió y se hacía necesaria la fabricación de otra similar accesible para los más pequeños. Aprovechamos también para cavar en la tierra y hacer una piscina de lodo para ellos.

Nueva puerta de entrada para el cuchucho y los guacamayos rojos

Estábamos un poco cansados de la dificultad de acceso en la jaula del coatí, además de que la propia puerta estaba vieja ya. De esta manera, una tarde hicimos otra puerta nueva y la colocamos en un sitio distinto de la jaula, junto a la jaula de manejo. Los guacamayos rojos también tienen una `puerta nueva, pero esta sigue en el mismo sitio.

Ampliación de la jaula de Tina/Tre

Tina/Tre, tiene ahora 3 de los 6 espacios que hay en la cuarentena, uno más que antes. Cuando empecemos a construir jaulas en el nuevo emplazamiento del Centro, que será muy pronto, ella por fin podrá tener el espacio que se merece.

Construcción de la nueva jaula del Songo

La jaula del Songo songo era tan vieja que cada día hacía un nuevo agujero y estaba fuera. Siempre que podemos, nosotros la ponemos fuera, pero esto no se puede permitir cuando no estamos, por lo que se hizo necesario pensar en nueva malla para una nueva jaula.
Comentamos la idea como parte del trabajo de la próxima semana y una de nuestras voluntarias, Elisabeth, decidió comprar esa malla como donación al Centro. Nos acompañó en la compra y añadió además una nueva pala de buena calidad. El total de la donación fue de 98,94$. 81,24 por 50m de malla y 17,70$ por la pala. ¡Muchas gracias Elisabeth! Ahora el Songo tiene ahora una bonita jaula donde pasar los días que no puede salir.

Colaboración en la cosecha de cacao

Este mes los árboles de cacao estaban cargando mucho y la gente del lugar nos pidió ayuda para recolectarlo. Ayudamos en cogerlo del propio árbol y a cortarlo y separar las semillas para su posterior secado. Aquí en la Amazonía se han hecho incluso cursos por parte del estado para que la gente aprenda a crecer su propio cacao para vender y de esa manera tengan otra fuente de sustento.

Progreso del margay

Como anunciamos anteriormente, el margay está completamente recuperado de su enfermedad y de los 2,25kg que pesaba cuando empezó el tratamiento, ahora pesa 3 kg exactos. Ahora hay otro problema, y es que le falta pelo en la cola. Una voluntaria veterinaria nos dio su opinión (sobre una posible infección de hongos)y decidimos llamar al veterinario para chequear. Sabremos el siguiente mes…

Compra de la máquina para trabajar con la madera

El Centro siempre ha necesitado comprar tablas para construir, ya sea para los animales o casas para las personas. Por lo que, desde hacía tiempo se estaba pensando en comprar una máquina que pueda hacerlas, y especialmente con la mudanza del Centro, ahorrar dinero en un futuro. Se esperó hasta tener algunos ahorros y por fin la pudimos conseguir.

Ampliación de la información de animales de la cocina

Continuamos poniendo más apuntes sobre nuestros animales a disposición de los voluntarios. Ya están casi todos los animales representados, por lo que queda poco para completar la información básica. Esperamos con el tiempo, y quizá con ayuda de los voluntarios, ir poniendo todo tipo de info y más especializada.

Primer sueldo en muchos meses

Ya que en estos meses de mayo, junio, julio y agosto el Centro marcha bastante bien, hemos tomado la decisión de recibir nuestro primer sueldo en muchísimos meses. La cantidad acordada es de 200$ por trabajador. Esto alcanza para cubrir los gastos básicos y alguna cosa más. Hasta ahora, el dinero que se cogía del Centro sólo cubría básicamente la comida y el transporte al Puyo para comprar. Cuando se necesitaba dinero para comprar alguna cosa especial como por ejemplo zapatos nuevos porque los viejos ya se rompieron, por supuesto también lo cubría el Centro. En los próximos meses veremos cómo va evolucionando la situación y si existe la posibilidad de cobrar algo más: en Sacha Yacu creemos que todo trabajador debe recibir un salario digno que le permita vivir y ahorrar para el futuro, aunque en muchas ocasiones, esto es difícil de conseguir.

Proyecto de liberación

Estamos muy contentos de anunciar que seguimos con el proyecto de liberación en marcha y avanzando poco a poco. El siguiente paso es realizar una buena propuesta para la Organización que nos ayudará: en ella debe constar absolutamente todo lo que se va a hacer, con un cronograma y un plan donde se muestren los presupuestos manejados durante todo el proceso. Es una maravillosa noticia ¡a la vez que un duro trabajo!, con lo cual iremos informando de los adelantos que vayamos realizando.

Triste despedida

Continuamos con nuestra mala racha y ahora tenemos que hablar sobre un tema difícil: es realmente triste para nosotros tener que decir que Lluvia está muerta. La noche del 23 de mayo se quedó fuera de la cocina y en la mañana del 24 apareció muerta en el corral de los peccaries. Aquí copiamos la carta para ella que está en el grupo de facebook:

Sólo queremos hacerte saber lo mucho que te queríamos, aunque creemos que ya lo sabías. Extrañaremos mucho tus maullidos siempre que abríamos la nevera o el armario de la comida; la manera en que siempre saludabas encima de la puerta cuando abríamos la cocina por las mañanas; lo mucho que te gustaba la leche, y el pan; cómo querías entrar al baño cuando alguien entraba y metías tu patita por debajo de la puerta, llamando. Te echaremos mucho de menos.
Especialmente Benji. Tú le enseñaste la mayoría de las cosas que sabe porque eras la primera en hacerlas. Luego él lo intentaba. Hacíais una pareja perfecta y ahora él no tiene con quién jugar.

Adorábamos lo cariñosa que eras, y también confiada. Por esa razón decidiste una mañana temprano ir a jugar con los peccaries. Probablemente pensaste que eran tus amigos y por eso dejaste que se acercaran tanto. Pero ellos no entienden que sólo tenías curiosidad y ganas de jugar.
Aunque algún día haya otros gatos, nunca será lo mismo.
Te queremos, descansa en paz.

Gracias a todos y gracias especiales para Jasmin, que se tuvo que ir pronto (2 meses antes). Eres una persona encantadora y una buena trabajadora. Ya sabemos lo mucho que te gusta esto, así que esperamos que puedas regresar algún día. Te echamos de menos. Gracias.

Improvements and enrichment in every cage

During the whole month we have been dedicated to improve all the enclosures. We have put branches, ropes and plants and in some cases, such as for margay and woolly monkey even a new house. For May only left is work on the 2 big capuchin cages.

Review and fixing the peccaries enclosure

The ground continues to slide down in peccaries enclosure, which makes them have the opportunity to escape and they try! To avoid this we have to review the whole fence and ground around and fix the areas needed. Time will tell if it is enough for the moment!

Reconstruction of the steps by the Centre entrance

Since a time, the steps nearby the quarantine area were in horrible conditions, so we have started to improve them making some new. The work that we did took several afternoons.Thanks to the effort of our volunteers, now we can go up and down the stairs without the risk of dying!

Working towards the welcome of our first organized group of volunteers

During this month we have been finishing the details to receive our first organized group of volunteers which is in addition of the volunteers who come normally. This will happen in August. Thanks to the help and support of International Student Volunteers and its volunteers we will be able to achieve some of our next future plans such as the building of the kitchen and bathrooms for the new location for the Centre. We hope that all will be good and in the way it is planned.

Margay’s illness

In this month, our margay has become a little ill. She started to loose weight little by little and the alarm call was about her right eye which one day seemed not to be so good. So we called a vet friend of ours and asked her to come and check: the rest seemed to be ok so we thought that she simply had internal parasites and maybe because of her weakness it appeared the infection in the eye.

Margay was de-wormed in mid March, but it could be possible that the parasites started to have resistance. Her treatment is new medicines for worms, with other 2 different compositions so in that way we can cover the whole range of possible parasites, and general antibiotics for the eye improvement. In addition, her food is being supplemented with a high doses of vitamins to cover the possible lack in it. She began to improve around 1 week afterwards, so her eye is completely healthy now and she is continuing to gain weight. We will inform you of how she progresses.

Try in getting a bank account for the Centre

Now that we have our documents approved, we tried to get a bank account but after asking to several banks it seems no possible: Only the NOGs can have their own bank account and the Centre is only registered at the Ministry as Wild Animal Rescue Centre (into another category). So by now, we need to continue using a personal account which everyone who wants to donate funds can; just ask us.

Search of release places

Some time ago we started a search (for release places for the potentially ready animals although this has been slow because we had other priorities. We had a meeting with the other interested parties in this project and at the moment we are assessing our possibilities and adapting a work scheme. A good scientifically based release is a difficult and delicate process, due to both the logistical and its high costs, which it seems will be assumed by the Organization we are dealing with. We hope to see soon if this is possible and we will inform about it very soon.

Mejoras y enriquecimiento en todas las jaulas

Durante todo el mes nos hemos dedicado a mejorar todas las instalaciones. Hemos puesto muchas más ramas, cuerdas, plantas y en algunos casos, como en el caso del margay y el chorongo, incluso casa nueva. Para mayo sólo queda trabajar en mejoras para las 2 jaulas grandes de capuchinos.

Revisión y arreglos en los pecaríes

La tierra sigue deslizándose para abajo en el recinto de los pecaries, lo que provoca que tengan la oportunidad de escaparse y quieran hacerlo. Para evitar esto, revisamos toda la malla y suelo alrededor y arreglamos las zonas necesarias. El tiempo dirá si es suficiente por el momento.

Reconstrucción de las escaleras de entrada al Centro

Desde hacía ya tiempo los escalones cercanos a la zona de cuarentena se encontraban en pésimas condiciones, por lo que comenzamos a mejorarlos haciendo unos nuevos, trabajo que llevó algunas tardes. Gracias al esfuerzo de nuestras voluntarias, ¡ahora podemos subir y bajar sin riesgo de morir!.

Trabajo en la recepción del primer grupo organizado de voluntarios

Durante este mes hemos estado ultimando también los detalles para recibir nuestro primer grupo organizado de voluntarios (además de los voluntarios que vienen de la forma habitual), lo cual será en agosto. Gracias a la ayuda y apoyo de International Student Volunteers y sus voluntarios podremos lograr algunas de nuestros propósitos cercanos como puede ser la construcción de la cocina y los baños en el nuevo emplazamiento para el Centro. Esperemos que todo salga bien y como está planeado.

Enfermedad del margay

En este mes, nuestra margay ha caído enferma. Empezó a perder peso poco a poco y la voz de alarma nos lo dio el ojo derecho, que un día parecía no estar del todo bien. Llamamos a una veterinaria amiga nuestra para que viniera a ver: todo lo demás parecía estar bien, así que pensamos que simplemente tenia parásitos internos y quizá debido a su debilidad, sobrevino la infección en el ojo. El margay fue desparasitado a mediados de marzo, pero quizá los parásitos han podido desarrollar resistencia a ese compuesto. Su tratamiento es una nueva desparasitación, con otros 2 compuestos distintos para cubrir todo el rango de parásitos posibles, y antibióticos generales para la mejoría del ojo. Adicionalmente, su comida está siendo suplementada con una dosis alta de vitaminas para suplir las posibles carencias. Tras esto, empezó a mejorar alrededor de 1 semana después, de manera que el ojo ya está completamente sano y sigue ganando peso. Informaremos de cualquier novedad sobre su estado.

Intento de conseguir una cuenta bancaria para el Centro

Ahora que tenemos los papeles en regla, intentamos conseguir una cuenta bancaria pero tras preguntar en varios bancos, parece que no es posible: sólo las ONGs pueden tener su propia cuenta y el Centro sólo está registrado en el Ministerio del Ambiente como Centro de Rescate de Animales Silvestres (así que es otra categoría). Entonces, y por ahora tenemos que seguir usando una cuenta personal que cualquiera que quiera hacer una donación puede preguntarnos.

Búsqueda de lugares de liberación

Hace tiempo iniciamos la búsqueda (aunque de manera muy lenta debido a otras prioridades) de posibles lugares de liberación para los animales potencialmente preparados para ello. Tuvimos una pequeña reunión con la otra parte interesada en este proyecto y en el momento estamos viendo posibilidades, costes y acomodando un buen esquema de trabajo. Una liberación con una buena base científica es un proceso difícil y delicado, tanto por la logística como por sus altos costes (los cuales asumiría en un principio la Organización con la que estamos negociando). Esperamos ver en un corto periodo de tiempo si esto es posible e informaremos pertinentemente sobre ello.

Birth of the peccaries

After the birth last month of two squirrel monkeys we can now announce the birth of two peccaries, making the group a total of 8. They were born on the morning of March 10th and since that moment they never go too far from their mum.

Fortunately, a few days before the birth, we had already enlarged their enclosure and created an area with leaves growing all around so they have an extra place to shelter. We have also made it easier to enter from one side of the enclosure to the other by raising the soil where the steps and the door are. This was necessary due to the ground eroding and making the step too large for some of the peccaries. Now the way through is flat and easy for them, especially for the small ones.

This means all the current improvements planned for their enclosure have been completed, including fixing their old shelter in February.

Death of a capuchin monkey

After the positive news of the births we unfortunately have to follow it with some terrible news. Sadly one our capuchins has died (see the picture.

One day, when we began to clean, we found him unconscious in his cage so we quickly covered him, gave him a hot water bottle (because the day was cold), and give him oral serum and liquidized banana. Around 45 minutes after that the monkey became conscious again and started to eat by himself. After observing him for the night we put him in to an empty cage. The next day he continued to look very weak, but he was eating (very nutritious food) and drinking. We asked for advice from a vet friend of ours and he said that it could be caused by a lack of vitamins so we started to give him a solution rich in vitamins and oligoelements. He continued improving for 7 days but on the eighth day he relapsed and we did not have time to do anything: he died that night.

This monkey came to the Centre from Ambato in August 2009 when the environmental police (UPMA) did a check up on him at the clinic of the PAE Foundation (Ecuador’s Animal Protection). Despite the results of this check up indicating good health we think that the animal could have had an existing chronic disease because he never seemed a very healthy monkey, including his psychological state. For example, nobody ever saw him jump (he always moved through the cage by climbing slowly) and he always was very skinny even though he ate as much as our other capuchins.
His death makes us very sad: Some come and some others go......

Movement of capuchins

Keeping on with the capuchins!
One morning we woke up and heard unusual sounds coming from the capuchins’ 2 big cages. The reason for this was that they had broken the door between their two cages and all 10 monkeys were mixed together. Although it was not a planned introduction we have used it to our advantage and made some changes in the groups. For a long time we wanted to try to move the 2 low ranked female monkeys in the left cage because they weren’t happy in that group. It was very hard for us to try and do this because, due to their fear of us, they did not get close enough for us to catch them. However, with the mix of all the monkeys, it became possible!

At the moment the situation looks better because in the left cage the group is almost the same as before but in a different cage, so this new habitat allows them to spend the whole day exploring every corner. And on the right cage the two weaker females are no longer being harassed.
We will be observing the evolution of the groups closely and, if we have to, we will modify the group structure again until we find the best organizations.

Meat introduction in the capuchins’ diet

And even more capuchin news….. In the wild these monkeys can catch small vertebrates but in captivity there are not many natural opportunities to do this. So we have decided to give them a small piece of meat once a week (as well as continuing to give them their weekly egg) to complete their required protein consumption. They are, of course, very happy with this change.
We will be renewing and improving diets continually for our animals’ welfare and to try and ensure our animals do not get tired of eating the same things for every meal.

Improvements in tayra, kinkajou, songo songo, red macaws and coati cages

In this case, the volunteers took the initiative of re-modeling the cages of the tayra, kinkajou, songo and red macaws. In some cages they have put in new planks and logs and in other cages they have put in more leaves and branches. This is because little by little the animals are breaking their existing internal environments. The environmental enrichment is a great idea because the animals use these new places to climb/sleep/eat on and new environments also encourage the animals to move differently within their cage. The volunteers also took the initiative of buying planks and tools to continue with the cage re-modeling.

There have also been improvements to the environment of the coati cage and, without a doubt, he appreciates the chance to move a little more now within his cage and not get too fat.

Kinkajou’s voluntary giving

On Sunday March 21st we received a female kinkajou from a neighbour of the community. The man’s dogs had caught the kinkajou near his house the night before.

She came in with the tip of her tail missing about 3cm of flesh and with the bone very visible, but fortunately she was not bleeding. On top of this injury her eyes were cloudy and she appeared to be blind. She looked extremely weak and was not aggressive. We proceeded to clean the wound and gave her food and observed her appetite. She ate something and not long after that she fell asleep so we decided to leave her alone and avoid putting her under any more stress. The next day she slept almost the whole day (normal for a kinkajou) but in the night, when we cleaned the wound on the tail and gave her food and water, she was still sleeping. The day after this we could see that one of her eyes was very bad and was now leaking puss which surprised us because we thought that she had been blind for a long time. Immediately we contacted another rescue Centre which has a clinic and a permanent vet. After visiting this Centre we decided that the best option was to move the animal there for continued professional treatment.

She was diagnosed as being a very old and ill animal and this was probably the reason she was caught on the tail by another animal (possibly before the dogs). The plan was to see if she would show improvements over the next few days and then, when she was stronger, to amputate the end of the tail. But four days after the move to the other centre the vet told us that although her eyes and tail were improving the kinkajou had stopped eating. We all decided that euthanasia was the best option for her.

Songo free during the day

Lately we have made the decision of letting songo free for most of the day: she always stays by the surrounding area of her cage so we can see her and, despite the squirrel monkeys sometimes bothering her, she is happy just to be outside (even though she doesn’t move much.

Donations

In the month of March the Centre has received some very important economic help from a good friend and also as a gift from Chile-inside/Southamerica-inside, one of the Organizations which we work with in the search of volunteers. The total has been $600 of financial support. We would like to take this opportunity to thank them for believing in us and supporting us in our work.

Anecdotic day

Finally, we would like to mention the world wide event prepared by WWF every year (this year it was on March 28th at 8:30 pm local time in every country). Its objective is to encourage people to continue to pay attention to the issue of global warming. The idea is to do a simulated power cut in every country for 1 hour to stress the idea that through adopting the positive environmental habits of many dedicated people all around the world we can improve many things: “The Earth Hour” does not pretend that just 1 hour with no electricity makes a significant difference. What is intended is to remind people (and inform those who do not yet know) that due to our excessive waste of the Earth’s resources, which contributes to massive amounts of pollution, the Earth is in serious trouble and getting worse. By helping just a little everyday and doing small things, such as turning off electronic devices when we do not use them (and not using stand-by), significant amounts of energy can be saved and a lot of pollution can be avoided throughout the whole world.
At Sacha Yacu, due to the coordinator being a member of WWF, we wanted to contribute to this event. It was very easy for us because we had some things to burn so we lit a fire under the light of a full moon: there was no lack of light!

Nacimiento de los pecaries

Tras el nacimiento de los 2 barizos ya podemos anunciar la llegada de 2 nuevos pecaries al grupo (ahora un total de 8). Nacieron el 10 de marzo en la mañana y desde entonces no se separan de la mamá ni un momento. Unos días antes ya habíamos ampliado su recinto acomodando un lugar con hojas de las que crecen alrededor para que de esta manera tengan otro lugar en el que refugiarse. También hemos facilitado la entrada de un lado al otro del recinto, justo donde se situaban los escalones y la puerta, ya que la tierra se está deslizando para abajo y cada vez estos escalones estaban más altos. Ahora el paso es plano y fácil para ellos, especialmente para los pequeñitos. Así, se completas las mejoras en su corral, ya que en febrero ya estuvimos arreglando también la zona donde tienen su refugio antiguo.

Muerte de un mono capuchino

Tras la buena noticia de los nacimientos, y lamentablemente, tenemos que dar la terrible noticia de la muerte de uno de nuestros monos (ver foto). Un día, cuando nos disponíamos a limpiar lo encontramos desvanecido en su jaula y rápidamente lo arropamos, le pusimos una botella con agua caliente al lado (porque el día estaba frío), y le dimos varias jeringuillas de suero oral y banana licuada. Alrededor de 45 minutos después, el mono recobró completamente la consciencia y empezó a comer por sí mismo. Para pasar la noche y tenerlo en observación, lo pusimos en la jaula que tenemos vacía. Al día siguiente seguía débil pero comiendo (alimentos muy nutritivos) y bebiendo. Pedimos consejo a un amigo veterinario y nos comentó que podría ser falta de vitaminas, por lo que le empezamos a dar una solución rica en vitaminas y oligoelementos.
Así, continuó mejorando durante 7 días, hasta que al octavo, recayó y no tuvimos tiempo de hacer nada: esa misma noche murió.

Este mono llegó en agosto de 2009 al Centro desde Ambato, donde la policía ambiental (UPMA) le hizo el chequeo médico en la clínica de la Fundación PAE (Protección Animal de Ecuador). A pesar de que este chequeo indicaba el buen estado de salud, creemos que el animal podía tener alguna enfermedad crónica ya que aquí nunca pareció de los monos más saludables, incluido su estado psíquico. Haciendo memoria, nadie lo vio nunca saltar (siempre subía a los sitios escalando despacio), y siempre estuvo muy delgado a pesar de que comía suficiente.
Su pérdida nos produce una gran tristeza: unos llegan y otros se van…

Movimiento de capuchinos

¡Seguimos con capuchinos!
Una mañana nos levantamos oyendo sonidos distintos a los que normalmente hacen los capuchinos en las 2 jaulas grandes. y la razón fue que habían roto el carríl por el que se mueve la puerta que está en medio y se habían juntado y mezclado todos. Lo cierto es que aunque ha sido un hecho involuntario, nos ha servido para hacer cambios en los grupos: desde hace tiempo queríamos probar a mover a otro sitio a las 2 monas de rango más bajo de la jerarquía de la jaula izquierda ya que por momentos la situación se hacía insostenible. Para ello, el problema con el que nos encontrábamos es que debido al miedo, no se acercaban a nosotros para poder cogerlas. Con la mezcla de todos los monos por fin fue posible.

Por el momento, la situación parece mejor ya que en la jaula izquierda, el grupo está casi como antes pero en otra jaula distinta, por lo que su nueva ubicación les hace estar todo el día explorando cada rincón. Por otra parte, en la jaula derecha ya nadie suele acosar a las 2 monas más débiles.
Iremos observando la evolución de los grupos y si fuera necesario se volvería a modificar su estructura hasta dar con la más idónea.

Introducción de carne en la dieta de capuchinos

Y más capuchinos….. Ya que en la naturaleza ellos pueden capturar algún pequeño vertebrado y aquí en el Centro es más difícil que puedan hacerlo, hemos decidido darles también (además del huevo semanal) un pedacito de carne una vez a la semana para completar el aporte de proteínas. Ellos están contentísimos con este cambio, por supuesto.
Por nuestra parte, seguiremos renovando y mejorando dietas continuamete por el bienestar de los animales y también para que no se cansen de comer las mismas cosas.

Mejoras en la jaula del cabeza de mate, songo songo, guacamayos rojos y cuchucho

En este caso los voluntarios tomaron la iniciativa de remodelar las jaulas del cabeza, cusumbo y songo. En algunos casos han cambiado soportes, troncos y tablas por otros nuevos y en distinto sitio, y en otros han puesto más hojas y ramas ya que poco a poco se van rompiendo. El enriquecimiento ambiental funciona ya que los animales utilizan estos nuevos lugares y modifican así su patrón de movimientos. Los voluntarios también tomaron la iniciativa de comprar tablas y herramientas de trabajo para continuar con las remodelaciones.
El cuchucho también ha tenido enriquecimiento y mejoras en su jaula, lo cual sin duda agradece para moverse todavía más y no engordar.

Entrega voluntaria de un cusumbo

El domingo 21 de marzo nos llegó un cusumbo hembra al Centro por parte de un vecino de la comunidad, cuyos perros habían capturado cerca de su casa la noche anterior. Ingresó con el extremo de la cola sin carne en unos 3cm y el hueso expuesto, pero afortunadamente sin sangrar. Por otra parte, sus ojos estaban blancos y no daba señales de ver nada. Presentaba un estado muy débil y se mostraba poco agresiva (quizá debido a eso). Procedimos a limpiar la herida y a darle algo de comida para observar su apetito. Comió algo y posteriormente se durmió, por lo que preferimos dejarle tranquila y evitar así estrés. Al día siguiente seguía prácticamente todo el día dormida (como es normal para un cusumbo), pero también por la noche cuando le limpiamos la herida de la cola de nuevo y le pusimos comida y agua. Al día siguiente a esto pudimos comprobar que el estado de sus ojos empeoró, cosa que nos sorprendió porque pensábamos que era ciega desde hacía tiempo. Inmediatamente nos pusimos en contacto con otro Centro de rescate que posee clínica y una veterinaria permanente. Tras llevar allí al animal, decidimos que la mejor opción era que permaneciera allí para su tratamiento.
Su diagnóstico es que probablamente sea un animal viejo y enfermo, lo cual causó que algún otro animal lo capturara (posiblemente anterior a los perros) por la cola. Y debido a su enfermedad es posible que también comenzara la infección en sus ojos. El tratamiento consistía en ver si mostraba mejoras en los siguientes días y entonces, cuando sienta más fuerte, amputar el extremo de la cola. Pero cuatro días después del traslado la veterinaria nos dijo que aunque sus ojos y cola estaban mejorando, el cusumbo había dejado de comer. Entre todos decidimos que la eutanasia era lo mejor para ella.

Songo libre durante el día

Últimamente hemos tomado la decisión de dejar al songo songo libre la mayor parte del día: ella siempre permanece por los alrededores y a la vista, y a pesar de que los barizos la molestan de vez en cuando, es más feliz simplemente con el hecho de estar fuera, aunque en realidad no se mueva mucho.

Donaciones

En este mes de marzo el Centro ha recibido una importantísima ayuda económica por parte de un buen amigo y también como regalo de Chile-inside/Southamerica-inside, una de las Organizaciones con las que trabajamos en la búsqueda de voluntarios. La ayuda total ha sido de 600$. Desde aquí les damos las gracias por creer en nosotros y apoyarnos en nuestro trabajo.

Día anecdótico

Nos gustaría hacer mención del evento mundial preparado por WWF cada año (este año el 28 de marzo a las 20:30 hora local de cada país) y cuyo objetivo es llamar la atención una vez más sobre el calentamiento global del planeta. La idea es hacer una simulación de un apagón en todos los países durante 1 hora para enfatizar el pensamiento de que al unir las buenas costumbres medioambientales de muchísimas personas en todo el mundo, se pueden lograr y mejorar cosas: “La Hora del Planeta” no pretende hacer una gran diferencia en 1 hora en la que las luces y demás aparatos eléctricos se apagan, lo que se pretende es recordar a la gente (e informar a los que todavía no lo sepan) que debido a nuestro desmesurado derroche de los recursos de la Tierra, lo que contribuye a ingentes cantidades de contaminacón, el planeta está en un serio problema y cada vez peor. Poniendo un poco de nuestra parte todos los días y haciendo pequeños gestos como puede ser apagar los aparatos que no estemos usando (y no vale con el stand-by), se puede ahorrar mucha energía y evitar tanta contaminación a escala mundial.
En Sacha Yacu, y ya que la coordinadora forma parte de WWF, queríamos rendir nuestro homenaje también a este evento, lo cual fue fácil ya que teníamos varias cosas que se podían quemar y encendimos una hoguera bajo la luz de la luna llena: ¡luz no nos faltó!

¡Por fin la Patente de Funcionamiento!

Surprise arrival of the boa

In the beginning of this month it was a surprise the arrival of a red tail boa (Boa constrictor constrictor) from a neighbour of the community. He told us that he saw how they were trying to sell it in El Triunfo and after have a talk with the dealers, he got it for the Centre. The boa arrived one night into a bag and we realised soon that it is very fierce. It’s around 2 metres long and weighs about 5 kg. After examining it externally and check all is perfect with it, we took it into a little cage to spend the night into the tool shed. We left it there the next day too for not to stress it out and the next day we built a cage paying attention to its needs.
When it arrived, it had white eyes, what indicated that it would change its skin soon. This happened exactly 15 days after that.

Almost finished the construction of the capuchin monkeys little houses

With the construction of 4 more houses the work it’s almost finished. Some of the houses were hung from the cage’s roof, so the monkeys can get asleep swinging if they want. Some others were hang on branches or trees. Currently, it would lack one more house in the left cage and 2 more in the right one. In this last one, we reuse too our old wooden sink, so now it’s a hanging table to spread the food.

Houses for the birds too

We spent time thinking about building houses for our birds too because although many of them like to be under the plastic when there is a storm or even like to get wet, we wanted to provide them more refuge in case they want it. So, two of our volunteers had that idea too and we put shoulders to the wheel! We started building houses for the macaws: they have a triangular shape so in that way they can turn comfortably. One house is for the 2 red macaws and the other one for the blue macaw. At the moment, the red macaws are reluctant to use it, but we hope they accept it! On the other hand, blue macaw enters, go out and destroy it happily when he wants or when he gets quite wet.

There is another more house built for the Amazon parrots. It has double entrance and inside it has a wall in the middle with a hole so in that way they can pass to each side if they want.

Toys for Songo and capuchins

Some volunteers thought that maybe Songo could be a little bored so they decided to think about an easy game for her: the toy consists of a small box with a light door and a string to open it. The back side it is made with fence so Songo can see if there is food in the inside. Currently, what she does is reach with her hand the nuts through the fence. We hope she understands that for opening the door she needs to pull the string.

On the other hand, the games for capuchins consist of a box with a hole in which only can pass a banana vertically and the hand of the monkey. In this way, they only can get the food in a determinate way.

New info at the kitchen

It was our desire to put information about some of our animals and some other basic things to know in the “Conservation world”: what CITES is and how it works. Its appendices too and the classification of our species; what UICN is, its red list and in which categories are included each species; what a hotspot is and in which one we are.
We hope to continue the widening of all this info because we consider very important to facilitate the volunteers the learning and the interest about these and other many related issues.

New “shit hole”

It was a necessary thing to do due to our current damp was very full. The work was exhausting and it took around 3 days to finish but between all of us we dug a hole about 2 metres deep, To finish it, we set a fence around it so the chickens or the dogs can’t enter to search for food where the animals rubbish is.

De-worming

We proceeded this month too to the quarterly de-worming, which was done in 2 days. The medicine was given mixed with honey due to all the animals love it (except Songo…).

Birth!!

We are very proud to announce that our free squirrel monkeys have had babies. Just a few weeks before we realised that one of the monkeys was pregnant! The date of the birth was around February 27th. The most usual thing, the same as in humans, is that they only have a baby each time, but this time they have had 2! The babies go now hanging by the back of their mother and other female of the group.

We can announce too that one of the peccaries is pregnant too, so we hope to have 2 more babies very soon!

Delay in the obtaining of the Management Patent

In the previous newsletter we informed that the documents for the renewal of the Management Patent were submitted on January 5th. As the law says, they should have already been renewed. Well, 2 months later we are still waiting….. We are waiting too for the coming of staff from the Ministry to do an inspection because it’s an essential requirement just before the resolution of the papers. We are waiting for about 10 days since the date they said they were coming….. Now we are asked too for copies of documents not required before. So, here at the Centre we continue practically stopped because without documents we can’t do many things. We really hope that this situation will be solved soon for the best of the Centre.

Llegada sorpresa de la boa

A principios de este mes nos cogió por sorpresa la entrega de una boa constrictor (Boa constrictor constrictor) por parte de un vecino de la comunidad. Según nos contó, vio cómo estaban intentando venderla en El Triunfo y tras hablar con los traficantes, la consiguió para el Centro. Llegó en una lona una noche y pronto descubrimos que es bastante brava. Mide unos 2 metros y pesa alrededor de 5 kg. Tras examinarla externamente y comprobar que se encontraba perfecta, la pusimos en una pequeña jaulita para pasar tranquilamente la noche en la bodega de herramientas. La dejamos ahí también el día siguiente para no estresarla y al día siguiente le construimos una jaula de acuerdo a sus necesidades.
Cuando llegó tenía los ojos blancos, lo que señalaba que pronto iba mudar. Esto sucedió exactamente 15 días después.

Casi finalizada la construcción de las casitas de los capuchinos

Con la construcción de 4 casas más queda casi finalizado el trabajo. Algunas casas fueron colgadas de una cuerda en el techo de la jaula, con lo cual los monos pueden dormirse balanceándose apaciblemente si así desean. Algunas otras fueron colocadas fijas en ramas o en árboles. Actualmente quedaría por construir 1 casita más en la jaula de la izquierda y 2 más en la de la derecha. En esta última también reutilizamos nuestro viejo fregadero de madera, de manera que ahora es una mesa colgante para repartir comida.

Casas también para las aves

Llevábamos tiempo pensando en hacer casas para nuestras aves también porque aunque a muchas les gusta estar paradas cuando hay tormenta en una rama bajo el plástico protector o incluso mojarse, queríamos proporcionarles más refugio en caso de que quieran. Así, 2 de nuestros voluntarios tuvieron también esta idea ¡y nos pusimos manos a la obra! Empezamos construyendo casa para los guacamayos: es de sección triangular para que puedan darse la vuelta cómodamente. 1 es para los 2 guacamayos rojos y a otra para el guacamayo azul. Por ahora los rojos son un poco reacios a usarla, esperemos que la acepten! Sin embargo, el azul entra, sale y la destruye feliz cuando quiere o cuando se moja demasiado.
Hay construida una casa más para las amazonas. Tiene doble entrada y por dentro una pared en medio con un hueco para que puedan pasar si quieren.

Juguetes para Songo y capuchinos

Algunos voluntarios pensaron que Songo podía estar un poco aburrida, así que decidieron pensar un juego fácil para ella: el juguete consiste en una cajita con una puerta liviana y una cuerda para abrirla. En la parte de atrás hay una parte con malla para que pueda ver que dentro hay comida. Por ahora, lo que hace es meter la mano y coger el maní por los espacios de la malla. Esperemos que pronto entienda que para abrir y coger todo tiene que tirar de la cuerdecita.

Por otro lado, los juegos para capuchinos consisten en una caja con un agujero por el que sólo puede caber una banana colocada de manera vertical y la mano del mono. Así, sólo pueden sacar la comida de una determinada manera.

Nueva info en la cocina

Como era nuestro deseo, ya hemos colocado información sobre algunos de nuestros animales y algunas otras cosas básicas a saber en el mundo de la Conservación: qué es CITES y cómo trabaja. También sus apéndices y la clasificación de nuestras especies en su lista; qué es la UICN, su lista roja y en qué categorías está cada especie; qué es un hotspot y en cuál nos encontramos.
Esperamos seguir ampliando toda esta información ya que consideramos muy importahte facilitar a los voluntarios que aprendan y se interesen por estos y otros muchos temas relacionados.

Nuevo “hueco de la mierda”

Era una cosa que se debía hacer ya que nuestro actual vertedero estaba ya muy lleno. El trabajo fue agotador y duró alrededor de 3 días pero entre todos cavamos un hueco de unos 2 metros de profundidad. Para finalizarlo, pusimos malla alrededor para que los pollos o los perros no puedan entrar a buscar comida en la basura de los animales.

Desparasitación

También en este mes procedimos a la desparacitación interna trimestral, cosa que se hizo en 2 días. Se les dio el desparasitante mezclado con miel, mezcla que les encanta a todos los animales (excepto al Songo…).

¡¡Nacimiento!!

Estamos muy orgullosos de anunciar que los barizos (monos ardilla) que están libres han tenido bebés. ¡Nos dimos cuenta sólo unas semanas antes de que una de las monas estaba preñada! La fecha de los nacimientos fue alrededor del 27 de febrero. Lo más común es que, al igual que en el ser humano, tengan 1 cría cada vez, ¡pero esta vez han tenido 2! Los bebés ahora van colgados en las espaldas de la mamá y de otra hembra del grupo.

Podemos anunciar que una de las pecaris está preñada también, ¡así que esperamos tener 2 bebés más muy pronto!

Retraso en la obtención de la patente de funcionamiento

En el boletín anterior informamos de que los papeles para la renovación de la Patente de funcionamiento del Centro fueron presentados el día 5 de enero. En 1 mes, según la ley, deberían de haber estado tramitados. Pues bien, 2 meses después todavía estamos a la espera…… También estamos a la espera de que personal del Ministerio venga a realizar una inspección ya que según nos dijeron es requisito fundamental justo antes de arreglar los papeles. Llevamos esperando unos 10 días desde la fecha fijada para venir… También ahora se nos piden copias de unos documentos que anteriormente nadie pidió. Con lo cual, en el Centro seguimos prácticamente parados porque sin documentos no se puede hacer gran cosa. De verdad deseamos que esta situación se arregle pronto por el bien de todos.

Building of games and toys

With the help and imagination of one of our volunteers specially, some of the animals have been benefited with new and ingenious games to develop their intelligence and have a fun time. This is the case of the woolly monkey whom we have given a game to think for a while before getting his food. As you can see in the scheme, it consists in a inclined cage with several doors which he must go opening for the food rolls down and finally get it out. It was hard at first that he paid attention to what he had to do, but after a few days of training and a day leaving all the food inside the box, he learnt that what he had to do was pull the doors. At the moment, woolly doesn’t understand perfectly how it works because he opens the doors alternatively without an order, but we think that after a few more time he will guess the trick.

For the Tayra, who loves water, we put a big full bucket dug into the ground with a structure to keep it in place, in this way we hope that the drinking water in the bowl will not get as dirty!
Also the capuchin monkeys have had their fun time because we built a see saw for them (at the moment there is only in the left big cage). At first they were a little scared because the plank is too long and it is quite high: when they touch it and falls, they get scared. But finally, our monkey who came from a circus in the past was the one who collected the banana that was left on one end. The others were still afraid but have curiosity about the new game. We hope to build other one for the other big cage soon.

We have other ideas about some other games which we hope to build very soon.

Arrival of Benji & Lluvia

As all who have been at the Centre know, mice have no rest and that is the reason why we needed cats. But they needed to be grown at the Centre to get used to the animals and not to bother them. For that, we were searching for cats during several weeks at the market but here is more difficult that getting a dog. At last, one day we found someone who sell cats and we got 2 (male and female) in order to play each other and not with another animals.

The male, Benji, is quite quiet, Especially when he arrived and before he was given tablets for internal parasites. Now he is perfectly healthy and he is still a little quiet, but happy when he runs chasing insects.

Opposite is Lluvia who is quite active and always wants to play with Benji. He seems to complain about this! Lluvia likes to chase insects too and even one day she chased a little frog that she ate…

We hope that they start to chase mice soon!!!

Breeding chicks

Is not the first time that the Centre has had live prey for carnivorous animals, but it was difficult because the chicks disappeared in the night!
We have decided to see the bright side of the loss of the turtle (if it could be possible) to use the enclosure to breed chicks; it is nearer to the middle of the Centre so if a problem occurs we are nearer to help prevent invasion!

Movement of Naughty

Naughty was the responsible that they had to amputate Tina/ Tres’s leg. So, to avoid problems she was alone in a cage. But we wanted for a long time to move her, because that cage is not suitable for a monkey to stay for a long period of time. Finally, we decided to join Grumpy and although they are not friends, they don’t fight to each other. As we said, it seems like Grumpy likes to be alone so he is a little uncomfortable with the arrival of a girl and they spend the day walking around but avoiding each other.

We have had to return the new monkey back to his old cage from Elvis, Ada and Scarlet cage as he was getting strong there and started to bite Scarlet’s ears. We did tried to put him in the right big cage because we knew that in the left cage he was not suitable but the right proved impossible because the dominant monkey (Ninja) and his friend wanted to fight with him. So finally he returned to his old cage.

Continuation with the re-modeling of the kitchen

As some of you know, the sink was getting old and every time it has more and more holes that we needed to cover with some clothes. With the new year we also have new sink! This one is made of aluminum and although is not as big as the other, we have put at both sides the old cupboards as a shelves so there is much more space to leave the dishes, etc. and at least your feet don’t get wet washing up!

New cage for the blue headed parrots & bronze winged parrot

At last we have had the opportunity of enlarge the cage of the 7 birds that can fly. We wanted for so long to do this but we hadn’t enough money to buy the fence. However, searching for another thing we came across a roll of fence for birds which it was bought in the past. So with that 30 meters of fence plus the good fence we had from the old cage, we have built a new one of about 4 meters long, 3 meters wide and more than 3 meters high where the parrots can fly comfortably.

New doors for kinkajou’s cage

The kinkajou has a new door for enter the cage and, finally, a new one for the trap cage!! In this way there is no need of pushing the fence while the kinkajou is into the trap cage and it’s safer for the volunteers: everyone volunteering at the Centre knows about kinkajou’s character!

This month has had many good and interesting news and we wish that the new month was at least so good as this one. Many thanks to all who make this possible and if there is someone thinking about being a volunteer, we encourage you to come, meet us personally and specially, help us in the work of giving these animals and the new ones a good life.

Construcción de juegos y juguetes

Gracias especialmente a la imaginación de uno de nuestros voluntarios, algunos de los animales se han beneficiado con nuevos e ingeniosos juegos con los que desarrollar su inteligencia o tener un rato de diversión. Este es el caso del chorongo (woolly) a quien le hemos puesto un juego para que piense un poco antes de conseguir su comida. Como se puede ver en el esquema, consiste en un cajón inclinado con varias puertas que él tendrá que ir abriendo para que la comida ruede hacia abajo y finalmente salga. Costó un poco al principio que prestara atención a lo que tenía que hacer, pero tras varios días de entrenamiento y un día dejándole toda la comida dentro, aprendió que lo que tiene que hacer es ir tirando de las puertas. Por ahora, el woolly no entiende del todo cómo funciona, ya que abre las puertas alternativamente sin ningún orden, pero creemos que dentro de muy poco ya habrá adivinado el truco.
Para el cabeza de mate, que le encanta el agua, pusimos un gran cubo lleno en el suelo con una estructura para que no lo pueda sacar, de esa manera esperamos que no ensucie tanto su bebedero…
También los capuchinos han tenido su momento de diversión ya que construimos un sube y baja para ellos (por ahora sólo hay en la jaula grande de la izquierda). Al principio tenían un poco de miedo ya que la tabla es muy larga y queda bastante arriba: cuando tocan y se cae, se asustan. Pero finalmente nuestro mono proveniente del circo en su pasado fue el que consiguió la banana colocada en el extremo. Los otros siguieron un poco asustados pero tenían bastante curiosidad por el nuevo juego. Esperamos construir muy pronto otro para la jaula de la derecha, que la tenemos algo más olvidada en ese sentido.
Hay pensados algunos juegos más que esperamos también hacer muy pronto.

Llegada de Benji y Lluvia

Como todos los que habéis pasado por el Centro sabéis, los ratones no dan tregua, y por eso es que necesitábamos gatos. Pero no valía cualquier gato, sino crecidos en el Centro para que se acostumbren a estar con los animales y a no molestarlos. Es por eso que llevábamos bastantes semanas buscando gatos en el mercado pero aquí es mucho más difícil que conseguir un perro. Por fin un día encontramos a alguien que los vendía y cogimos 2 (gato y gata) para que jugaran entre ellos y no con ningún animal. El gato, Benji, es el marrón, y la gata, Lluvia, la de 3 colores (genéticamente sólo las gatas pueden tener 3 colores). Benji es bastante tranquilo, especialmente cuando llegó y ates de empezar a darle las pastillas para los parásitos internos. Ahora está perfecto y aunque sigue siendo bastante tranquilo, cuando quiere corre por ahí cazando insectos. Luvia por el contrario es muy activa y juguetona y siempre está queriendo jugar con Benji, aunque éste se queje la mayoría de las veces. También le gusta cazar muchos insectos e incluso un día cazó una rana pequeña que se comió… ¡¡¡Esperemos que dentro de poco empiecen a cazar también ratones!!!

Criadero de pollos

Hemos decidido sacar el lado bueno de la pérdida de la tortuga de agua y aprovechar su corral para criar pollitos. No es la primera vez que el Centro tiene presa viva para alimentar a los carnívoros, pero se hacía algo difícil ya que los pollos desaparecían por la noche. Es por eso que necesitábamos un lugar más cercano donde tenerlos para que esto no sucediera de nuevo y ante cualquier problema estar cerca para ver qué pasa.

Mudanza de Naughty

Naughty fue la responsable de que a Tina/Tre tuvieran que amputarle una pierna. Por ese motivo y para que no hubiera más prioblemas, estaba sola en una jaula. Pero llevábamos tiempo queriendo cambiarla ya que esa jaula no es apropiada para que un capuchino esté ahí durante un largo preiodo de tiempo. Finalmente decidimos ponerla con Grumpy y aunque no son amigos, tampoco se pelean. Como ya dijimos a Grumpy parece que le gusta estar solo, así que le incomoda un poco la llegada de una chica y se pasan el día esquivándose. Esperemos que con el tiempo puedan llegar a ser amigos.
Por otro lado, tuvimos que mover al mono que habíamos cambiado a la jaula de Elvis, Ada y Scarlet porque como anunciamos, se estaba volviendo fuerte y empezó a morder las orejas de Scarlet. Así que probamos en la jaula grande de la derecha porque sabíamos que en la de la izquiera no estaba muy bien, pero fue imposible ya que el mono dominante (Ninja) y su amigo querían pelear con él. Así que finalmente volvió a su antigua jaula.

Continuación de la remodelación de la cocina

Como algunos sabéis, el fregadero ya se estaba haciendo viejo y cada vez le salían más huecos que había que tapar con algún trapo. Pues bien, con este año nuevo, también tenemos fregadero nuevo! Este es de aluminio y aunque no es tan grande como el otro, hemos colocado a su lado los viejos armarios a modo de estanterías, con lo cual ahora hay mucho sitio para poder dejar los platos, cubiertos, etc, ¡y al menos no te mojarás los pies fregando!

Nueva jaula para las loras cabeciazules, y alibronceada

Por fin hemos tenido la oportunidad de agrandar la jaula de las 7 loras que vuelan. Llevábamos mucho tiempo deseando hacer esto pero no teníamos el dinero suficiente para comprar la malla necesaria. Y al final no lo necesitamos ya que buscando alguna otra cosa descubrimos un rollo de malla fina para aves que se habría comprado en el pasado y nadie se había acordado de él. Así que con esos 30 metros de malla más la que se podía utilizar de la vieja jaula, hemos contruido una nueva de aproximadamente 4 metros de largo por 3 de ancho y más de 3 de altura donde las loras pueden volar más a gusto.

Puertas nuevas para la jaula del kinkajou

El kinkajou tiene una nueva puerta para entrar a su jaula y finalmente una nueva para la jaula de manejo!! De esta manera no hay necesidad de empujar la malla mientras el kimkajou está en la jaula de manejo y es más seguro para los voluntarios: ¡todo el mundo que ha hehco voluntariado en el Centro conoce el carácter del kinkajou!

Este mes ha habido muchas noticias buenas e interesantes así que espereamos y deseamos que el mes próximo sea al menos tan bueno como este. Muchas gracias a todos los que hacéis esto posible y si hay alguien pensando en ser voluntario, os animamos a venir, conocernos en persona y sobre todo ayudarnos en la tarea de poder dar a estos animales y a los que lleguen, una buena vida.

Capacitation in the Management of Wild Fauna in Captivity

This month started with the first Course of Capacitation in the Management of Wild Fauna in Captivity that the Ministry of Environment of Ecuador has given. It was intended for the staff working in Centres that have wild fauna and it followed the National and CITES standards. The Course, which was attended by staff from the Centre, took place on 1 and 2 of December in the Zoo of Baños city.
The meeting between people dedicated to animals was interesting and it was useful too to learn about good things as well as mistakes from the others, moreover, the mutual exchange of experiences.

The Course consisted of a theoretic part and practice in which we were shown some things about handling animals and what to do in specific situations. We visited the enclosures of the zoo too.

The Sacha Yacu Wild Animal Rescue Centre would like to encourage the Ministry, and other institutions working in the problems of the wild animal trade, to keep on giving more courses like this or about other concerns, in order to have more direct contact with the people who work in it, and in this way too, create the need of updated data, documents, etc, by the Ministry of Environment.

Loss of the turtle

This month, we sadly need to say that our turtle disappeared from its enclosure. We don’t know what or who could take it, but one morning we got up and it wasn’t there anymore. After searching the surrounding area, we could see that the fence of the enclosure was in good condition as well as the ground, so it couldn’t have escaped.
It’s so sad that these things happen and without any chance of doing anything about it. The only thing we can do is to wish it good luck and hope that this never happens again.

Construction of more individual houses for capuchin monkeys

This month, we are lucky to have the help of a past volunteer who, after more than a year, has returned to the Centre to spend some more time here. He loves capuchin monkeys, so, due to the shortage of volunteers this month, we were especially dedicated to putting some games and to build and put some more individual houses (with a good quality wood) inside the big left cage (right cage still needs to wait).

Thinking of capuchin monkeys, we think that the new one in Elvis, Ada and Scarlet’s cage will have to leave the cage because he is scaring this last one and breaking the harmony of this peacefull trio. It’s interesting to see how a low ranked monkey in a group could be “dominant” in another group. We will keep you updated.

Re-modelling of the cupboards in the kitchen

After having a few fights with mice in December, we have decided to get rid of the cupboards in the kitchen and change them for new ones. The reason is that mice could easily get into the old ones and made more holes in the fence, so we’ve moved a wardrobe from a volunteer’s dorm to the kitchen. Maybe it isn’t the most appropiate thinking in the aesthetics, but it works well. Moreover, we did some changes and improvements in it, building a big door and making it more spacious inside. Someday we would like to paint it in another colour so it doesn´t look so strange in the kitchen, but for now it’s more than enough.

Ending of the Wild Animal Management Plan

After several months of hard work, because four priority is attending to the needs of the animals, the Centre and the volunteers, and then continue with the Plan in our “free time”, we are able to say that it is finished and we handed it over on 5th January 2010. The Ministry will have 15 days to ask for everything they consider necessary and after that time, they will have 1 month to give us the Patent. It only rests to hope that everything is ok and the documents will be done as soon as possible.

Taller de Capacitación sobre Manejo de Fauna Silvestre en Cautiverio

Este mes comenzó con el primer Taller de Capacitación sobre Manejo de Fauna Silvestre en Cautiverio que ha impartido el Ministerio del Ambiente del Ecuador. Era dirigido al personal de Centros de tenencia de vida silvestre y se enmarcaba dentro de la Normativa Nacional y CITES. El curso, al que acudió personal del Centro, tuvo lugar los días 1 y 2 de diciembre de 2009 en en Zoológico de la ciudad de Baños.
Resultó interesante la reunión de toda la gente dedicada a los animales y sirvió también para aprender tanto de las cosas buenas como de los errores de otros, además del mutuo intercambio de experiencias.
El taller constó de una parte teórica y una parte práctica en la cual se mostró algunas cosas sencillas sobre el manejo animal y qué hacer ante determinadas situaciones. Además, hubo una visita por las instalaciones del zoológico.
Desde Sacha Yacu Centro de Rescate de Fauna Silvestre animamos al Ministerio y demás instituciones relacionadas con la problemática del tráfico de animales silvestres a seguir impartiendo más cursos y talleres de este tipo o de cualquier otra índole para de este modo tener un contacto más directo con la gente que trabaja en ello, además de crear así una necesidad de actualizar datos, documentos, etc, por parte del Ministerio del Ambiente.

Pérdida de la tortuga

Este mes tenemos que decir tristemente que nuestra tortuga acuática desapareció de su corral. No sabemos qué o quién pudo cogerla pero lo cierto es que una mañana nos levantamos y ya no se encontraba ahí. Tras buscar por los alrededores, pudimos comprobar que la malla del recinto estaba en buenas condiciones, así como el suelo, por lo que no pudo escapar por ningún sitio.
Es muy triste que ocurran estas cosas y además sin poder hacer nada al respecto. Lo único que podemos hacer es desearle buena suerte a la tortuga y esperar que esto no pase nunca más.

Construcción de más casas individuales para capuchinos

Este mes contamos con la ayuda de un antiguo voluntario que pasado más de 1 año, ha regresado al Centro por algún tiempo. Le encantan los capuchinos con lo cual, y ya que en este mes tuvimos de nuevo muy pocos voluntarios, nos dedicamos especialmente a poner algunos juegos y a hacer y poner algunas casas más (con madera de buena calidad) en la jaula grande de la izquierda (la derecha todavía tendrá que esperar).
Pensando también en los capuchinos, creemos que el nuevo en la jaula de Elvis, Ada y Scarlet tendrá que marcharse ya que está atemorizando a esta última y rompiendo la tranquilidad de este trío pacífico. Es interesante ver cómo un mono puede ser uno de los más bajos en el rango del grupo y al pasar a otro, convertirse en el “dominante”. Informaremos al respecto.

Remodelación de armarios en la cocina

Después de tener bastante lucha con los ratones, en diciembre hemos decidido jubilar los armarios de la cocina y cambiarlos por otro. El motivo es que en los antiguos, los ratones podían entrar fácilmente y cada vez hacían más agujeros en la malla, de manera que hemos trasladado un armario de los dormitorios de los voluntarios a la cocina. Quizá no es el más apropiado en cuanto a estética, pero ciertamente funciona bien. Además, hicimos algunos cambios y mejoras en él, construyendo abajo una puerta grande: así es bastante espacioso en su interior. Algún día nos gustaría poder pintarlo de otro color para que no se vea tan extraño en la cocina, pero por ahora es más que suficiente.

Finalización del Plan de Manejo de Fauna Silvestre

Después de varios meses de duro trabajo, ya que primero había que atender las necesidades de los animales, del Centro y de los voluntarios y después continuar con el Plan en los ratos “libres”, por fin podemos decir que está acabado y entregado a fecha de 5 de enero de 2010. El Ministerio tendrá 15 días para pedir cualquier cosa que crean oportuna y tras ese periodo, tendrán 1 mes para otorgar la renovación de la Patente de Funcionamiento. Ya sólo queda esperar y confiar en que todo esté correcto y los papeleos se hagan en la mayor brevedad posible.

New “home” for the 2 free parrots (Amazona farinosa)

At last we had the opportunity of spending a couple of afternoons putting again some branches as perches between the trees in front of the volunteers’ house with a waterproof roof with leaves as refuge for the 2 free parrots.
We also tried too to put two of our flightless parrots (Amazona amazonica) outside of their enclosure. Just leaving the one who is almost blind and the one scared of everything. However it was not possible as one parrot did not want to go out and the other one was left in the trees close to the others, but they wanted to fight which lead to the orange winged Amazon parrot running away to some trees nearby. However, after a while we were able to catch it and put it back into its enclosure. We now need to think of the best decision for them.

Fixes in the enclosure of the Amazon parrots which can fly

In this month we did the whole enclosure restructuring due to the birds biting and destroying all: we put new and additional branches up and supported the roof fence with new posts; set a new table for the water bowl and a plank for the food, and cleaned all the old branches and planks on the ground. In this way the place looks like other and we’re sure that the birds realize the difference and like the improvements.

In this enclosure there were 6 monkeys, and although with people they’re friendly (except 1), between them there are too many problems: 2 of them are stressed because they are the lowest ranking monkeys in the group and the other ones don’t let them to eat peacefully. So, we’ve been seeing, thinking and deciding the enclosure and the mates for they could live better.
One afternoon we moved one of them that used to stand near to us when feeding time for the others not to bother him so much. So the movement was relatively easy. To the top Capuchin cage to join Elvis, Scarlet and Ada because we knew that they would not bother him. For him it was a very positive change: he looks like a different monkey because in his previous home he was always alone on the top of the enclosure and didn’t interact so much with the other monkeys. Now he moves around freely, plays a lot with the water when we open the tap to fill in the pool and is always near the food when we give it to them. Even he eats more than the others now. Despite all of this, he is still very dependent of people and is always waiting for someone to enter the enclosure to climb on and for them to hold him in their arms.
The other monkey that we were talking about is still waiting for being moved because it was impossible for us to catch her. We’ll try soon again and will let you know what happens.

We are still waiting to set the rest of the individual houses for capuchin monkeys in the enclosures. We hope to be able to put in their place in December.

Another activities

Harvest of papayas: some afternoons we go to our lands deeper in the jungle to catch ripe papayas from the trees for the animals. This is very good for them because these papayas are completely organic and native, so if we can, we always try to keep one afternoon in the week for this. In this way, the volunteers have the opportunity too of seeing the area where we want to move the Centre and learn about the plants that grow here and about the way of life of the indigenous people.

During this month there was party time too because there were parties in El Triunfo (a small community near here) and we all went to watch the parade of different indigenous peoples with their typical clothes and dances. It was a competition of these dances and other one of beauty, moreover free food, lottery and shows. It was a great experience!

Renewal of documents/ Wild Animal Management Patent

Finally, the Wild Animal Management Patent, and with it the renewal of documents, it’s closer. It’s all practically finished and with some final retouching and a complete revision, it will be ready, in that way in the next newsletter it would be presented. We’ll tell if there was any problem or everything has been as expected.

Well, this newsletter is near to the end, but before just to thank sincerely to family and friends that in this case have helped economically (always in spirit), their valuable contribution.

Nueva “casa” para las 2 loras libres (Amazona farinosa)

Por fin tuvimos la ocasión de pasar un par de tardes colocando de nuevo ramas entre los árboles de enfrente de la casa de los voluntarios y también un tejado impermeable con hojas de refugio para las 2 loras libres. Intentamos sacar también a 2 de nuestras loras que no pueden volar (Amazona amazonica) fuera de su instalación (dejando ahí tan solo a la que apenas ve y a la que se asusta con todo), pero no pudo ser posible: una de ellas no quería salir y la otra fue colocada en los árboles junto a las otras pero querían pelearse. Así que como resultado la amazona alinaranja huyó por los árboles cercanos. Pasado un rato conseguimos cogerla y devolverla de nuevo a su instalación. Tendremos que pensar en la mejor decisión para ellas.

Arreglos en el recinto de las aves que vuelan (amazonas)

En este mes se llevó a cabo la remodelación completa de todo el recinto ya que las aves van picando y destruyendo todo: pusimos más y nuevas ramas; levantamos el techo de la malla con nuevos postes; colocamos una mesa nueva para el bebedero y uno de los comederos y limpiamos todo el suelo de ramas y tablas viejas. De esta manera parece otro lugar y estamos seguros de que las aves aprecian la diferencia y agradecen las mejoras.

Mudanza de uno de los capuchinos de la instalación grande de la izquierda

En este recinto había anteriormente 6 monos, y aunque con las personas son amigables (excepto 1), entre ellos hay bastantes problemas: 2 de ellos están estresados ya que tienen el rango inferior en el grupo y los demás no les dejan comer tranquilamente. Por esto, estuvimos viendo, pensando y decidiendo en qué otra instalación y con qué otros compañeros podrían vivir mejor. Una tarde sacamos a uno de ellos que acostumbraba a quedarse junto a nosotros a la hora de comer para que los otros no le molestasen tanto. Así que el traslado fue relativamente fácil. Los compañeros elegidos fueron Elvis, Scarlet y Ada ya que sabíamos que ellos no le molestarían. Para él ha sido un cambio muy positivo: parece otro mono totalmente distinto ya que en su anterior hogar siempre estaba solo por las alturas y no interactuaba mucho con los otros ni con nadie. Ahora se mueve por todos los sitios, juega mucho con el agua cuando abrimos el grifo para llenar la piscina y siempre está al lado de la comida cuando es la hora de comer. Incluso ahora come más que los demás. Aún así, sigue siendo muy dependiente de las personas y siempre está esperando a que alguien entre para subirse encima y colocarse entre sus brazos.
La otra mona de la que hablábamos sigue a la espera de poder ser trasladada ya que fue imposible poder cogerla. En breve lo intentaremos de nuevo e informaremos de ello.
También siguen a la espera de ser colocadas el resto de casas individuales para capuchinos que quedaban. En el mes de diciembre esperamos poder ponerlas.

Otras actividades

Recogida de papayas: algunas tardes bajamos a las tierras que tenemos más abajo en la selva para recoger papayas ya maduras de los árboles para los animales. Esto es muy bueno para ellos ya que son totalmente naturales y autóctonas, así que siempre que podemos reservamos 1 tarde a la semana para ir. De esta manera, los voluntarios también pueden ver la zona donde nos gustaría trasladar el Centro y aprender sobre las plantas que crecen aquí y sobre la forma de vida de la gente del lugar.
También en este mes hubo momentos festivos porque fueron las fiestas de la Parroquia El Triunfo y fuimos todos allí a ver desfilar a gente de distintos pueblos indígenas con sus trajes y danzas típicos. Se hizo un concurso de estas danzas y también otro de belleza, además de comida gratis, una lotería y actuaciones. ¡Fue una gran experiencia!

Renovación de papeles/Plan de Manejo

Por fin el Plan de Manejo, y con él la renovación de papeles está, más cerca. Ya está prácticamente acabado y con unos cuantos retoques finales y el repaso general, estará listo, así que en el siguiente boletín estaría ya presentado. Se comentará si ha habido algún problema o todo ha sido como estaba planeado.

Bueno, este boletín llega a su fin, no sin antes agradecer sinceramente a los familiares y amigos que en este caso han prestado su ayuda económica (además de moral como siempre), su valiosa aportación.

Improvements in margay’s enclosure

Termites have done their circle of life: they were born, grew and multiplied and for their purpose they have used the wood constructions in the margay’s enclosure. In this month we’ve completely renovated the planks, trunks and houses of both sides of the cage and we’ve introduced some new plants to continue with the enrichment.

Move of Scarlet and Grumpy

It’s time for Scarlet to have company after her fight and we thought that the best option was in the company of Elvis and Ada: from the first moment they got along with each other because all of them are very quiet and passive creatures: Elvis and Scarlet are very cautious in what they do, while Ada contributes with energy and vitality of the youth.
On the other hand, Grumpy is happy in his new and bigger enclosure. He doesn’t like much company and is always causing fights, so for the moment, the best thing for him is to stay quietly at his new home.

Little fixes in the enclosures of the macaws, tayra and crested guan

Small daily and weekly fixes in the enclosures make big differences. This is the case of the macaws, whose drinking trough often drops and moreso one of them always has problems in getting his favourite food because the other one gets it beforehand. Just putting a better pathway and more branches makes a difference in reaching the food, problem solved.
The tayra needed some place to hide his food, so with a tunnel to enter in and out, or to keep objects hidden, which could better develop his instincts.
To continue with their behavioural enrichment, generally in the afternoon we think of new inventions to help the animals maintain their natural instincts: for example burying food or creating objects with food inside, enabling them to keep their minds active.

Renewal of documents

We are continuing to work on the renewal of the Wild Animal Management Patent when we have the sufficient time. Our first priority is the animals and the Centre. In November we hope to have it completed and ready to present to the Ministry of Environment.

Mejoras en la instalación del margay

Las termitas han cumplido bien su ciclo de vida y han nacido, crecido y se han reproducido, y para ello han utilizado las construcciones de madera de la instalación del margay. En este mes hemos renovado por completo las tablas, troncos y casas de las 2 partes de la instalación y hemos introducido alguna planta nueva para seguir con la ambientación.

Desplazamiento de Scarlet y Grumpy

Por fin es hora de que Scarlet tenga compañía tras su pelea y qué mejor opción que con los amigables Elvis y Ada. Desde el primer momento se llevaron bien y no hubo ningún problema puesto que los 3 son muy tranquilos: Elvis y Scarlet son muy cuidadosas en todo lo que hacen y Ada por su parte aporta la alegría y vitalidad propias de la juventud.
Grumpy está contento en su nueva instalación más grande. No le gusta demasiado la compañía y siempre está creando peleas así que por ahora lo mejor es que esté tranquilo en su nuevo hogar.

Algunos pequeños arreglos

Pequeñas mejoras diarias y semanales en las instalaciones hacen grandes diferencias. Tal es el caso de los guacamayos, ya que por un lado su bebedero se caía demasiado a menudo y además uno de ellos siempre tenía problemas en conseguir su comida favorita porque el otro la cogía antes. Colocando una mayor sujeción y más ramas que formen distintos caminos para llegar a la comida, el problema queda solucionado.
El cabeza de mate necesitaba algún lugar para esconder su comida, así que con un túnel para que entre, salga o guarde ahí lo que quiera, puede desarrollar mejor sus instintos.
En esta serie de cosas, continuamos con el enriquecimiento comportamental fundamentalmente por las tardes, de manera que pensamos en nuevos inventos para ayudar a los animales a mantener despiertos sus sentidos: por ejemplo enterrando comida o creando objetos con la comida dentro, consiguiendo así que tengan su mente activa.

Renovación de papeles

Seguimos trabajando en la renovación de la Patente de Manejo de Fauna Silvestre siempre que disponemos de tiempo. Nuestra prioridad son los animales y el Centro. En el mes de noviembre esperamos tener todo prácticamente acabado y listo para presentarlo al Ministerio del Ambiente.

Shortage of volunteers

The most outstanding thing in this month is the lack of volunteers (just 3 people), so the work has gone slow. This fact causes the shortage of economical resources and man power which are necessary for the Centre. Due to this shortage everything has had to remain the same way since August and wait for the volunteers come to help out to make changes such as rebuilding some cages.

The departure of Jan and the arrival of Carolina

Jan who acted as coordinator after Helen’s departure has returned reluctantly to England after staying an additional three weeks to help with the new volunteers.
The person in charge of the coordination from now is Carolina, who was a volunteer last year, and has been in touch with Wilfrido since then.

Acceptance of the new individual houses for capuchin monkeys

Wilfrido and several volunteers had built these individual houses and have now been accepted by the capuchin monkeys in one of the big cages. Thanks to all those who were creative in the morning enrichment work. We have observed every monkey inside their own cage in the night or when there is hard rain. There are some more houses which have already built which are for the other big capuchin cage. But a few more still need to be built so that each monkey can have its own house. A job for the new volunteers!

Computer problems with the website

In the previous newsletter we said that in a short time a breakdown of expenses would be shown, but it’s is proving difficult because we continue with computer problems. The only good thing is that it’s easier for us to write on the blog. We hope that these setbacks will be resolve as soon as possible.

Renewal of papers and documents

Every year Rescue Centres in Ecuador have to renew their Wild Animal Management Patent. At Sacha Yacu, this renewal has been delayed because it has coincided with a change time at the Centre (of name and staff), and with the current approval of new laws at the Ministry of Environment in Ecuador. The first law involves the achievement of a new Wild Animal Management Patent by the Centre, and the second law involves new requirements from the Ministry never demanded until now. A manual of all the proceedings at the Centre is being created to pass these new laws.
Due to this delay the Centre cannot have its own bank account until the papers are in order. Therefore the section “Join us” which is for donations and members on the website cannot be used yet.

Donation

This hard month has been best carried thanks to the economical contribution of our friend Josu González Casado: the amount donated has been of €228, which has been completely used in order to buy food for the animals. We are very grateful for his big effort.

This newsletter has come to the end, but we want to thank to all the people who give their help and spirit to us.

Falta de voluntarios

Lo más destacado de este mes es la falta de voluntarios (sólo 3), por lo que el ritmo de trabajo se ha ralentizado bastante. Este hecho implica la escasez de recursos económicos y mano de obra, tan necesarios en el Centro. Debido a esto, todo sigue prácticamente igual desde el boletín de agosto y a la espera de que vengan voluntarios para ayudar.

La marcha de Jan y la llegada de Carolina

Jan,quien actuó como coordinadora tras la marcha de Helen, ha regresado reaciamente a Inglaterra después de estar 3 semanas más adicionales para ayudar con los nuevos voluntarios.
La persona encargada de la coordinación de ahora en adelante será Carolina, la cual fue voluntaria el año pasado y ha estado en contacto con Wilfrido desde entonces.

Acogida de las nuevas casas individuales para capuchinos

Wilfrido y varios voluntarios habían construido estas casas individuales y ya han sido aceptadas por los capuchinos en una de las jaulas grandes. Gracias a todos aquellos que fueron creativos en el trabajo de enriquecimiento de la mañana. Se ha observado a todos los monos dentro de la suya por la noche o cuando hay lluvias fuertes. Hay más casas que ya están contruidas y que son para la otra jaula grande de capuchinos. Pero todavía El siguiente paso será instalar más casas, que ya están hechas, en la otra jaula grande de capuchinos. Todavía se necesitan algunas más para que todos los monos tengan la suya propia. ¡Trabajo para los nuevos voluntarios!

Problemas técnicos con la web

En el boletín anterior anunciamos que en un breve espacio de tiempo estarían en la web los gastos de agosto y entre otras cosas, pero nos está siendo difícil ya que seguimos con problemas técnicos informáticos. La única cosa buena es que es más fácil para nosotros escribir en el blog. Esperamos que estos contratiempos se solucionen lo antes posible.

Renovación de papeles y documentos

Cada año, los Centros de Rescate en Ecuador realizan la renovación de la Patente de Manejo de Fauna Silvestre: esta renovación en Sacha Yacu se está retrasando, ya que ha coincidido con una época de cambio en el Centro (de nombre y de personal), y también con la aprobación de nuevas leyes que se está llevando a cabo actualmente en el Ministerio del Ambiente de Ecuador. La primera ley implica la realización de un nuevo Plan de Manejo de Fauna Silvestre por parte del Centro, y la segunda conlleva nuevas exigencias del Ministerio hasta ahora nunca requeridas. Para cumplir las nuevas leyes se tiene que hacer también un manual que englobe todos los procedimientos en el Centro.
Por este motivo el Centro todavía no tiene una cuenta bancaria propia (hasta que los papeles no estén en regla) y por lo tanto el apartado de “Únete a nosotros” (para donaciones y socios) de la web no puede ser utilizado aún.

Donación

Este duro mes se ha sobrellevado algo mejor gracias a la aportación económica en mano de nuestro amigo Josu González Casado: la cantidad donada ha sido de 228€, la cual ha sido utilizada íntegramente para comprar la comida de los animales. Queremos darle nuestras más sinceras gracias desde aquí por su gran esfuerzo.

Este boletín ha llegado a su fin, pero no sin antes dar las gracias a todas las personas que nos prestan su ayuda y ánimo.

Continuation of the July’s newsletter

Remember that in the previous newsletter Grumpy and Scarlett were in recuperation process: Grumpy had to be able to be accepted again and the wounds of Scarlett were been healed. Well, we tried the integration for Grumpy into the troop with the result of other fight (in which nobody was injured). This fact leaves him in the same situation again and more time is needed for this not happen again.
For her part, Scarlett is in the last phase before she joins the group once again.
We hope these angers will not be forever…..

Helen’s departure

The most important thing that happened in August was the departure of Helen, the current coordinator. The reason to leave is that she’s decided to assume new professional challenges for which she must return to her country. We regret so much her departure but we’ll keep in touch with her, of course.
The news was a surprise for everyone (included herself) and while we’re searching for a person who get her post in a permanent way, her work is been doing by Jan, a very kind volunteer who wanted to help. Her main job is to attend the volunteers and the emails (because all of this is in English and the Direction of the Centre does not have enough knowledge of the English language). She has all possible help from the Organisation and we hope and think she’s comfortable with us.

Arrival of a new capuchin monkey

During August one new animal arrived at the Centre: A male of a white-fronted capuchin who came from Ambato, where the environmental police (UPMA) did the check up to him at the clinic of the PAE Foundation (Ecuador’s Animal Protection) has there. The monkey is healthy and after the quarantine period for his observation, he’s good in one of the groups.

Construction of individual refuges for the capuchin monkeys

This month we’ve started the construction of individual houses for each one of them in their big enclosures. Due to their constant dominance fights not all the monkeys are accepted and have refuge when there is bad weather or a simple quiet place in which they can spend the time if they want to. So, we’ve been building 11 houses which are practically finished and together with the ones that are there everyone’s need are covered.

Website

Since we started running the website we’re working on it although as it can be seen, it is in a slow way. After the coordination with the languages (English and Spanish), the coordination to upload to internet, some computer problems, and the necessity of more hours in a day!!, we can say that we’re about to uploaded the expenses of the Centre in August and the map that shows the location of the enclosures at the Centre (although with more time we want to put a little picture of each animal when you pass the cursor over its “home”). The most important thing now and moreover the only 2 things that left to do are: the animals files and the link to donate which helps us with the expenses while we are preparing other more serious projects.

Continuación del boletín de julio

Recordamos que en el boletín anterior Grumpy y Scarlett estaban en proceso de recuperación: Grumpy tenía que volver a ser aceptado y Scarlett acabar de curar sus heridas del todo. Pues bien, por lo que respecta a Grumpy se intentó su reintegración con el resultado de otra pelea (en la que no salió nadie herido). Esto hace que vuelva a estar en la misma situación y se necesita más tiempo para que esto no vuelva a ocurrir.
Scarlett por su parte está en la última fase para intentar que se incorpore al grupo otra vez.
Esperemos que los enfados no sean para siempre......

La marcha de Helen

Lo más destacado que ha pasado este mes de agosto es la marcha de Helen, la actual coordinadora. La razón es que ha decidido asumir nuevos retos profesionales, para lo cual tenía que regresar a su país. Sentimos mucho su partida y seguiremos en contacto con ella, por supuesto. Como la noticia fue una sorpresa para todos (incluida ella misma), mientras encontramos una persona que ocupe su cargo de manera permanente, sus labores las está realizando Jan, una voluntaria que muy amablemente quiso ayudar. Su trabajo principal consiste en atender a los voluntarios y al correo (ya que todo esto es en inglés y la Dirección no posee conocimientos suficientes del idioma para hacer esto). Tiene toda la ayuda posible por parte de la Organización y esperamos y creemos que se siente cómoda con nosotros.

Llegada de un mono capuchino nuevo

Durante agosto sólo llegó un animal nuevo al Centro: se trata de un mono capuchino macho de frente blanca que vino desde Ambato, donde la policía ambiental (UPMA) le hizo el chequeo médico en la clínica de la Fundación PAE (Protección Animal de Ecuador). El mono está saludable y tras pasar el periodo de cuarentena para su observación ya se encuentra bien instalado en uno de los grupos.

Construcción de casas individuales para los monos capuchinos

Este mes hemos iniciado la construcción de casas individuales para ellos en las instalaciones grandes. Esto se debe a que debido a sus continuas peleas de dominancia, no todos los monos son aceptados y tienen refugio cuando hay adversidades meteorológicas o simplemente un lugar tranquilo en el que estar si así lo desean. Con lo cual hemos estado construyendo 11 casas (las cuales están prácticamente terminadas) que junto con las que ya había cubren las necesidades esperadas para cada uno.

Desde que la pusimos en marcha seguimos trabajando en la web aunque como se puede ver, de manera lenta. Tras la coordinación en los idiomas (inglés y español), la coordinación para subirlo a la web, algún que otro problema informático, y ¡¡la falta de horas en 1 día!!, podemos decir que estamos a punto de colgar los gastos del Centro del mes de agosto, y el mapa de ubicación de las instalaciones (aunque con más tiempo pensamos poner una fotito de cada animal al pasar el cursor sobre su “hogar”). Lo más importante ahora y además las 2 únicas cosas que quedan por poner son: las fichas de los animales, y el enlace a una cuenta de donación que nos vaya ayudando con los gastos mientras preparamos otros proyectos más serios.

En el boletín de este mes:

Cambios en la propiedad

El mayor cambio que ha ocurrido en el mes de julio es que el Centro se ha independizado de Santa Martha. La familia ha decidido que lo mejor es que ellos asuman el control total del futuro y dirección del proyecto. En este sentido sienten que pueden ofrecer permanencia y longevidad, que no podría darse de otra manera.
El Centro se llama ahora Sacha Yacu y la nueva web comenzó a existir la semana pasada, así que por favor, echad un vistazo y hacernos saber vuestra opinión. Es http://www.sachayacu.org/

Wilfrido es ahora el director del proyecto y es responsable de la dirección y su futuro. Cada mes podréis ver en la web lo que hemos estado haciendo y también el progreso económico del proyecto: cuántos voluntarios hemos recibido y cuánto ha sido gastado, para que todo el mundo pueda ver claramente la parte económica del Centro.

Nuevo hogar para los mapaches

Los mapaches están creciendo todavía y están empezando a desarrollar ya pequeños anillos en sus colas. Durante el mes de julio han crecido demasiado para su pequeña jaula de cuidados, donde habían estado. La renovación de la jaula de abajo del coatí se ha terminado y hemos puesto hamacas, nuevos caminos y escaleras para que se suban. Esta ha sido la primera oportunidad que han tenido para subir árboles y estirar sus patas, y después de unos pocos días indecisos ¡adoran su nuevo hogar!. Constantemente juegan y se cazan el uno al otro.

Nuevo hogar para Grumpy

A mitad de julio cambiamos a Grumpy a la jaula de manejo de los capuchinos de arriba, donde viven ADHD y Elvis. Elvis y Grumpy no parecen estar muy contentos de verse de nuevo y hubo algo de tensión, pero las cosas parece que se calmaron. Vamos a dejar a Grumpy en la jaula de manejo durante unas pocas semanas más para que los 2 tengan tiempo de acostumbrarse el uno al otro de nuevo.

Progreso de Scarlett

Nos alegra decir que Scarlett va muy bien. Su herida está curada del todo y le está empezando a crecer pelo otra vez en la zona calva. Se está empezando a aburrir en la cuarentena de nuevo así que esperamos poder cambiarla en agosto a uno de los grupos.

Mejoras en la jaula del kinkajú

¡Julio vio la renovación de la jaula del kinkajú! Tiene ahora todo el techo de ramas para escalar y explorar. El suelo ha sido cubierto con una capa de serrín y se han puesto canales de desagüe para intentar reducir la cantidad de agua que se queda en la jaula. Ahora es un lugar agradable para estar. Obviamente cuando el kinkajú está en la jaula de manejo, ¡loco como siempre!.

Mejoras en la casa de los voluntarios

Durante julio, una voluntaria muy amable donó pintura y un fin de semana asumió el trabajo de pintar los baños de la casa de los voluntarios. ¡¡Qué diferencia!! También compramos ropa de cama para los dormitorios y colgamos hamacas en el área común entre ellos. La respuesta de los vountarios es que ha sido un cambio realmente positivo al ser bueno el tener elección de áreas para relajarse.

Changes In Ownership

I guess the biggest change that happened in the month of July is that the Centre became independent of Santa Martha. The indigenous family have decided that it is in the best interests of the Centre if they assume total control of the future and direction of the project. In this way they feel that the can offer some permanency and longevity to the project that cannot be offered in any other way.

The Centre is now called Sacha Yacu and the new website went live last week so please do have a look and let us know your thoughts. It is www.sachayacu.org

Wilfrido is now the Director of the entire project and is responsible for the direction and future of the project. Each month you will be able to see on the website what we have been up to and also the financial progress of the project. How many volunteers we have received and how much has been spent so that the economical side of the Centre is clear for everyone to see.

New Home for the Raccoons

The raccoons are still growing and they are even starting to develop little rings on their tails. During the month of July, they had started to more than out grow the small nursing cage we had kept them. Renovation of the bottom coati cage was undertaken and we installed hammocks and new walk ways and ladders for them to climb on. Obviously this was the first opportunity they had had to climb trees and really stretch their legs and after their first few tentative days, they have got to love their new home! Constantly playing and chasing one another around.

New Home for Grumpy

In the middle of July we moved Grumpy into the trap cage of the Top Capuchin cage where ADHD and Evlis live. Elvis and Grumpy did not seem to pleased to see one another again and there was a little tension but things seem to have settled down since. We are leaving Grumpy in the trap cage for a few more weeks, just so that the two of them have a while to get set to one another again.

Scarlett Progress

We are pleased to say that Scarlett is doing very well. Her wound has healed entirely and the bald area is even starting to grow over with fur again! She is starting to get bored in the quarantine again and so in August we are hoping to be able to move her back into one of the troops.Improvements on the Kinkajou cageJuly saw the renovation of the Kinkajous cage! He now has a whole new ceiling of branches to climb on and explore. The floor of the cage has been covered with a layer of sawdust and drainage channels put in to try and reduce the amount of water collecting in the cage! Now, it is positively a nice place to be, obviously when the kinkajou is in his trap cage! Crazy as ever!

Improvements in the Volunteer House!

During July one very kind volunteer donated some paint to us and one weekend, undertook the job of painting the bathrooms in the volunteers house! What a difference!! We have also bought bedding for all the bedrooms and hung hammocks in the communal area between the dorms! Feedback from the volunteers is that it has made a really positive difference and it is good to have a choice of chill out areas!
